I strongly recommend you do more than what you learn in school. While the curriculum for getting your degree is a good start, it’s hardly reflective of real world development in many cases and the more experience you have, the better. Many places still use some version of Leetcode as part of their interview process so practicing those is useful, but having real world experience developing projects and understanding how to build a proper application will be useful. It's a good degree. I'd get it. I'm a security engineer that works in python and some scripting. I'm working on the CS degree and had a meltdown and almost quit it (check my post history) but I'm finishing. At the end of the day, these are good degrees. Do yourself a favor and stop questioning it. Regarding the job market: I've posted other replies in WGU threads in the past and I'm turning into a broken record, so forgive me if I come off as rambling and preachy lol: The tech world still needs talent. It's pretty apparent when you work in the field. But they need exactly that: talent. They unfortunately don't really need new grads and people who did a bootcamp. This is intimidating, and if you only get a degree and apply, waiting for a good job, there's a good chance it'll be frustrating. You definitely could find something! But it will be difficult. This raises questions, one of them probably being "ok, how do I get talent?" There are a ton of answers to that, but imo you just need to think outside the box, find some genuine interest, and keep going for a while. This is where people fail, then they apply aimlessly with low-effort "quick-apply" job applications, then post on Reddit "something something '500 applications' something something 'wasn't worth it' something something." Hands-on experience in the field is a lot different than school. I think most people will agree with that. But you sorta need both. It's weird. Idk where I'm going with this, scatterbrained right now. To the point: do stuff to get REAL experience. Do small projects at home. Buy a used rack mount server on Amazon. Put a hypervisor on it. Launch some VMs. Learn how to host your own website on it. Want to expose it to the internet? Oh shit. Time to figure out SSL/TLS. It's ugly. Make it pretty! It's broken. Fix it! It doesn't do much. Give it a back end! You don't like how you set all this up... you were new to keeping your code modular and object-oriented. It's pretty gross, very messy. No worries! tear it apart! Put it back together again! Maybe a new language this time? Who cares! Tired of the server? Learn to migrate it! Which cloud to use? Pick one! Do research! LEARN, BOI! It feels like all of our applicants do not do this, and it'd go a long way. Someone in an interview that walks our team through that looks waaaaaaaay better than someone who used chatgpt to get their degree as easily as possible and made a wix website from a YouTube tutorial. We're killing for some good developers. We have applicants. None of them know what they're doing. Some people will inevitably defend these people, saying "how are they supposed to get experience?" They need to go find it. I did. Everyone else did. Find an internship, work on something. Get interested. If all you see in the tech field is dollar signs, it's very obvious. I hope none of this sounds rude. I'm trying to be a bit dramatic for a mindset shift. You've got this. If you follow through with it and make it more than "a class," you've got it no problem.
