Still kind of confused on what an ARG is
welcome to ARGs! it can definitely be difficult to dive into, and a lot of information may be different depending on who you ask. Basically, my take is, an ARG is a story that takes place in real time through different mediums (videos, websites, social media, emails, dead drops) and sometimes, your interaction with the mediums makes the story go a different direction than originally planned. A choose your own adventure type of thing. Sometimes it’s blatant and sometimes it’s not lol. I do suggest ARGNets “Getting Started with ARGs” and Game Detective’s Wiki for some info as well! don’t hesitate to ask if you have other questions of course :) we’re glad you’re here! When did ARG start to mean “any internet horror story”?
it's a huge misusage issue, and it's worse than you think - it's to the point where this sub is sometimes flooded with people posting about "weird creepy" instagram, tiktok, or youtube accounts that are almost always either art projects w vaguely "analog horror" elements (actually just 80s or 90s fonts and vhs overlays) or unfiction, asking "is this an arg or a mentally ill person" (idk why that post title is so common tbh) i usually ask "i don't see any game elements, what makes you think it's an arg" and the answer is always some version of "it just looked weird". i don't think the wider public actually knows what ARG even stands for anymore lmao More on reddit.com

Alternate Reality Game - TV Tropes
June 14, 2007 - Many ARGs are in the horror genre and overlap with Analog Horror as the mystery format of an ARG synergizes well with an analog horror series's Nothing Is Scarier approach (the fact that the acronym spells "Arg" is a fun coincidence).

The initialism "ARG" has been used as a blanket term for concepts within the medium for quite some time now. It really isn't definitive of the subgenres that exist within it and people have made attempts at trying to get others to use different terms but, nothing else seems to stick. Within the medium you have Puzzle Hunts, Escape Rooms, Transmedia Storytelling, Immersive Theatre, Live Action Roleplaying and so on, and in some cases they may blur the lines between the genres. Generally speaking though one thing typically seperating them aside from concept, theme, plot and synopsis, is their overall-majority use of gating mechanics such as puzzle, time, task and narrative based gating. To be honest, to really understand the medium it takes quite some time. Edit: It isn't a dumb question. :)

Apologies if this is a repost, my phone glitched out when I was trying to post the first one.

I admittedly was never too into ARGs, like I never actually participated in one, I just followed a few casually and I understand the whole concept. But recently I have seen the term “ARG” broaden to mean any internet horror story being presented to the reader as if it were true, even if there are no game elements or any form of participation from readers. I especially see this being used for analog horror. Since I’m not too up to date on ARGs, I was curious as to when the definition changed, or if it’s just being widely misused?

Yesterday, I saw an ARG (Alternate Reality Game) iceberg with my boyfriend that included Petscope and the singer Poppy as popular ARGs. However, they didn't include the Lost ARG in the first tier. People are classifying any analog horror and web series as an ARG without having the 'G' part, which is the interaction with the real world and the audience. I just got mad because no one in the YouTube comment section was talking about this. I want to know your opinion on this topic. Sorry about my grammar; English is not my first language.

December 6, 2016 -

Im confused about what an ARG actually is. I get that it's an Alternate Reality Game, but I only recently started seeing ARG be used as a term during the Overwatch Sombra thing.

Im just not sure what actually counts as an ARG. Im mostly lost on what makes these things "games".

I started using youtube around 2005 and I have seen my fair share of "internet reality shows." Daxflame, lonelygirl15, and even Marble Hornets.

More recently I have seen 'That Poppy' refereed to as an ARG. Still, I have no idea what "game" has to do with any of it. These things are incredibly passive experiences.

Is the game part of ARG the mystery part? Trying to figure out the meaning? If so, would something like Don't hug me im scared count as an ARG?

What am I missing here?
