Moving to California- ventless banned?
Long term exposure to the gassed off by-products of combusted fuels including high particulant content, including propane & natural gas, has been shown to cause serious health issues, with the adverse effects on young persons being greater. I chose LNG for my new stove, range & oven, but I also installed a large range hood whose exhaust fan we turn on religiously when using gas inside the home. Yes, ban of new gas appliances started in several cities and ventless fireplaces are completely banned in new installations in California. So what! This new law does not prevent you from installing a vented gas fireplaces that will not dump moisture, and health damaging carbon monoxide and huge amounts of toxic particles into your living spaces. Vented or ventless gas fireplace in FL. Current home has an obsolete Lennox peninsula gas fireplace. Need to have it pulled out and replaced with either a new vented box/log set or a ventless box/log set. Since we have to start from scratch, any opinion on which system to go with and why?

Vented. Ventless are banned in several states due to the fact that they emit dangerous gasses. That does look nice though!

What is the point of a ventless fireplace?
They're illegal in Canada. Fire produces combustion byproducts.   Period.  It's a chemical reaction.   It's not magic. These combustion byproducts are not beneficial to human life.  Short term buildups of said byproducts, or repeated long term exposure to said byproducts, can endanger human life. It just not a good idea, and should be avoided if possible... Which simply amounts to using a vented system or electric heat. More on reddit.com

Ventless Fireplaces Explained | Safety of Vent Free Fires
Are ventless fireplaces safe to breathe?
Ventless fireplaces are built with safety in mind, but since they don't have an exhaust system, they release small amounts of combustion gasses such as carbon monoxide and moisture into the room. That's why they include built-in oxygen depletion sensors (ODS), which will automatically shut off the fireplace if oxygen levels get too low. To stay safe, make sure the room has good airflow, avoid running the fireplace for extended periods, and schedule regular maintenance to keep it working properly.

Can you turn a ventless fireplace into a vented one?
No, transforming a ventless fireplace into a vented model is not possible and unsafe. Ventless units are engineered to burn differently, and altering the system could affect combustion and void manufacturer warranties. If you're seeking improved air quality or ventilation, replacing your ventless unit with a vented gas fireplace is the safest and most effective option.
