r/Parenting on Reddit: Parental controls on YouTube kids (family link)
March 22, 2025 -

Parent here. Our kid has an android tablet integrated into family link, using his own Google account. The only content setting in family link for YouTube is the age. But I'd like to use the option the white-list only specific videos and channels. Well, how do achieve that? I understand that only works if a parent logs in on tablet with his account, but wouldn't be that break the link to family link? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something.

A quick internet search should help you... : It's important to understand that "whitelisting" YouTube channels for kids can be approached in a few ways, primarily using the YouTube Kids app and parental control tools. Here's a breakdown: YouTube Kids App: Approved Content Only Mode: The YouTube Kids app has a feature called "Approved content only." This allows parents to specifically select the channels and videos their children can watch. To use this: You'll need to use the YouTube Kids app. Within the app's settings, you can choose to "Approve content yourself." Then, you can select individual videos, channels, or collections that your child is allowed to watch. This is the closest you can get to a true "whitelist" within YouTube's own ecosystem. Google Family Link: While Family Link is excellent for managing your child's Google account and screen time, it doesn't offer a precise "channel whitelisting" feature in the strictest sense. However, it does provide tools to: Manage your child's YouTube Kids experience. Monitor their activity. Set content restrictions. Therefore, in conjunction with the youtube kids "approved content only" mode, family link is a very useful tool. Third-Party Parental Control Tools and Browser Extensions: Some third-party parental control apps and browser extensions offer features that can help you block or allow specific websites or content. These tools might provide more granular control, but their effectiveness can vary. It is important to do thorough research on any 3rd party applications, before installing them on devices used by children. Key Considerations: YouTube's content can change rapidly, so ongoing monitoring is essential. Using a combination of YouTube Kids' built-in controls and Google Family Link can provide a strong layer of protection.

I totally get the desire to whitelist and keep this program. But my wife and I got rid of YouTube kids years ago, and I am so, so glad. I hated everything about this app, including the length of videos. Whitelisting is the best way to go here, but I’d recommend getting rid of the app entirely in favor of a more curated service like Netflix or Disney plus.

r/familylink on Reddit: Family Link & YouTube Kids/YouTube Premium Workaround
December 9, 2023 -

Parent here. So, you can only add your young one to Google Family Link if your young one is under 13. However, you can prevent ads in YouTube Kids if you have a YouTube Premium account but you can't add a young one to a YouTube Premium family subscription unless your young one is 13 years or older!!!!! So it's either Family Link or YouTube Premium but not both!!!??? Remember, Family Link, YouTube Kids and YouTube Premium are all owned by Google, so this should be really easy, right!!!??? Is there a workaround here?
