In theory, no. In practice, very often, yes. The t-Student distribution is similar to the standard normal distribution, but it is not the same. However, if the number of degrees of freedom (which is, roughly speaking, the size of your sample) is large enough (>30), then the two distributions are practically indistinguishable, and so the t critical value has practically the same value as the Z critical value.

  1. Check if you perform a one- or two-tailed test.
  2. For a one-tailed test:
    • Left-tailed: critical value is the α-th quantile of the standard normal distribution N(0,1).

Calculating the critical z-score is actually unrelated to the calculated z-score for the problem. You only need to know the hypotheses and alpha to determine the critical z-value. We use the alternative hypothesis to figure out if it's a right-tailed, left-tailed, or two-tailed test, and then use alpha to figure out what area under the curve we need. Since this is a right-tailed test with alpha = 0.1, we want the last 10% of the bell curve, going off to the right. However, z-tables are always given from the left up to that z-score, so we need to do 1-0.1=0.9. Now we look at the inside of a z-table for a value very close to 0.9 and find the corresponding z-score. In this case, we get about 1.28. All the critical z-score means is that once we do the experiment and calculate a z-score from that, if our calculated z-score is greater than/less than the critical z-score (depending on left, right, or two-tailed), then we know the result is significant.
