Good plywood on top from Boulter Plywood north of Boston (a 3 hour round trip for me). Horrible plywood from Lowe’s (a 15 min round trip for me). Both are 3/4” “Maple” plywood, but I swear the Lowe’s wood has a finish on it. It is shiny and very smooth. The inner ply’s are garbage. I normally don’t mind exposed plywood edges on my personal projects but I can’t do that with the Lowe’s wood.

Construction grade plywood isn't meant for woodworking or exposed edges. It's not a fault of Lowes that their construction materials aren't finish-grade. Everyone says big box materials are "trash", but they're not. They're good for their intended purpose, and they're readily available. In your case, you traded quality for convenience. That's not a terrible trade-off sometimes. But it is a trade-off. So you can't make that decision and then complain about the quality anyway. That's not how this works.

I had this Lauan plywood I am trying to cut that is 1/4" thick. I finally just went with thick walnut plywood proof grade settings to cut it with two passes. It did cut through… mostly on the horizontal cuts but really didn’t cut through on vertical cuts. More on community.glowforge.com

Which 1/4 inch plywood have you used from Homedepot or Lowe’s ?
I have used birch plywood for shop projects that would have been fine for appropriate furniture applications. It was overpriced as compared to a real lumber yard / Plywood specialty distributor. Edit. Wait this is boat building. No I have never used big-box wood for boatbuilding. If I am putting that much time and effort into a project I want void free marine plywood and known quality hardwoods. I do use lauan plywood for templates. More on reddit.com

April 27, 2020Adding 1/4" plywood to 5/8" plywood subfloor?
There’s a very specific way to make a two layer subfloor. First ensure sheets are offset so no seams line up. Use screws, good ones like GRK R4s. Every 4” or so along the perimeter, every 6” in the middle. No adhesive unless you’re prepared to spread it evenly for 100% coverage with no voids. All those screws it’s unnecessary anyway. Screws should not go through the first layer into the joists. More on reddit.com
