99 Ways to Say No
August 13, 2018 - My word of the year is REST, so I can’t fit another thing in. ... No thanks, I won’t be able to make it. Not this time. ... No way, Jose. (Since my husband is named Jose, this is a favorite in our house.) Regrettably, I'm not able to. It's that time of the year when I must say no. It's a Wednesday. I have a "No on Wednesday" policy. Ask me in a year. I know someone that might be a fit for that.

My 2.5yo has words but no sentences.
Hello! I’m an early intervention speech pathologist. To move from words to sentences, children need to have at least 50-100 words in their vocabulary that they use regularly. In my experience, it usually happens closer to 75-100 words. You have to have enough vocabulary that you have a nice pool to pull from to make sentences. As others have mentioned, you could always have him evaluated by your state’s early intervention services to see if there’s enough of a delay to receive services. Alternatively, you could also have him privately evaluated at a hospital or clinic. More on reddit.com

100 Words for Facial Expressions
Huh. I'm more likely to use the descriptions than the words themselves. It might just be me, but things like 'roguish grin' or 'wistful eyes' just sounds amateurish. It doesn't cut to the heart of what evocative description really means. That's not in all cases, really. There are places for those words, but I dunno if I'd use them often in the context of describing a face or expression. I want to really feel the pain. More on reddit.com

February 25, 2025 - As someone who serves in a volunteer capacity to manage other volunteers, I really appreciate people who are honest in their “no’s”, rather than making excuses or not following through on what they agreed to do. For example, one volunteer let me know she strongly dislikes making phone calls and prefers to help in other ways. That enables the organization to utilize the strengths of volunteers. ... Yes, I’d 100% rather have an honest “no” than a guilty “yes” only to cancel or no-show at the last minute.

The Inuit Don't Have 100 Words For Snow, So Why Does The Myth Persist?
April 9, 2015 - They have an infinite number of possible words for snow, and for grass, and music, and coffee, and everything else. The myth is hard to kill. Pullum, in an essay called "The great Eskimo vocabulary hoax", says "The persistent interestingness and symbolic usefulness overrides any lack of factuality." It's too easy a joke to make, too simple a way of highlighting some perceived gap in Western understanding. But it's a myth, nonetheless.

r/toddlers on Reddit: My 2.5yo has words but no sentences.
March 6, 2022 -

My youngest is 2.5 this month. He has a some words and a great deal of interesting sounds but I keep seeing all these posts about peoples 2 and 3 year olds that talk in complete sentences. I’m worried he’s behind, it’s been 8 years since my oldest was this age so I don’t remember is he was fully talking by now.

Should I get an appointment with his doctor? Should I just let him develop at his own pace?

3 year update!

I’ve gotten several messages and new comments asking for an update so I figured I’d add it to the post

He’s on track now and talks non stop! We put him in a part time day care with other kids his age and got him tested for autism. He attended two years of a developmental preschool that has speech therapy and occupational therapy programs. After about two months of day care his vocabulary exploded and with the help of the pre school he was able to get back on track and will be attending a general education kindergarten this coming fall.

His doctor, therapists and I believe his delays were a combination of his autism and lack of peer to peer communication due to COVID isolation. The adults around him communicated plenty but peer to peer communication can sometimes be an important to development.
