How did mille (Italian) become numerically thousand in Spanish (mil) but million(1,000,000) in English?
"million" has an augmentative suffix. So it's basically "big thousand". More on reddit.com

I need help with simple Spanish translation
And remember that billions are different in Europe and USA. 1,000,000,000 is a thousand millions in Europe while in USA is called a billion. so one billion in Europe will be a million of millions. European billions are bigger ;-) Spain use the same terminology that the rest of Europe. So after millón we got mil milliones and then Billón. 1.000 Mil 1.000.000 Millón 1.000.000.000 Mil millones 1.000.000.000.000 Un Billón More on reddit.com

A Million, billion and trillion
This is a common mistake in poorly done translations. We change word after 10⁶ of each one: 10⁶ = 1 millón 10 x 10⁶ = 10 millones 100× 10⁶ =100 millones 1000 x 10⁶ = Mil millones 10.000 x10⁶ = 10mil millones 100.000 x 10⁶ = 100 mil millones 1.000.000 x 10⁶ =1 billón (millón de millones) And so on to trillones More on reddit.com

Spanish Numbers from 1000 to 1000000
May 9, 2023 - What if you wanted to say you had 42,500 of something? You’d just add 500, or quinientos, after 42 mil. All together, 42,500 would come to cuarenta y dos mil quinientos. Remember, you only add y if it’s part of the number 16-99! Otherwise, where we add the word “and” in English, Spanish doesn’t add y!

October 3, 2025 - The main thing with big numbers in Spanish is we don’t change units until we run out of sub-units. Both in English and in Spanish, a million has 6 zeros. Seven zeros is 10 million. Eight zeros is 100 million. But when we add another zero, in English we switch to a billion, while in Spanish we call that a thousand million.
