Amateur photographer here: I am also not a fan of puck lights in the ceiling. Most people use way too many and they would be uncomfortably close to my eyes. What are they trying to light? your head gets between them and the countertops. I took the approach of illuminating tasks. I have long overhead cupboards in my van and a split kitchen with half on each side. There are two (Obeaming brand?) Amazon warm white puck lights in the underside of the overhead cupboards only over the benchtops. They provide great diffuse light over the benchtop area. If your design manager is short, I suggest doing the same, but "shading" them with pressed brass style drawer pulls screwed into the underneath of your overhead cupboards on the inboard side to block the direct eyeline to the puck light. It will also reduce the light spill beyond the countertop. Much like the covers on old style theatre stair lighting. Unfortunately I'm struggling to match the colour temperature of my LEDs with the lamps in my range hood. I'm probably going to mod the range hood to take more of the puck lights. My wet bath cubicle is clinical AF, with just the LED ring on the maxfan dome fan. Cupboard kick lighting can look very cool, but it also highlights a dirty floor. Similarly, lighting at an acute angle with a flat wall will highlight any imperfections. I haven't installed my reading lamps yet, still constructing the bed head. but those are pretty cheap gooseneck stalks, obeaming again. If you want some lampshades as design features I'd start with maybe some small house coach light fixtures and retrofit them. you have a lot of freedom with LEDs running cool and 12V. Now that I think about it, you could probably find some longer drawer pulls of maybe 8" and put some 6" LED strips behind them. I have tried a few 12V LED strips and I have a bunch of aluminium extrusion with a diffuser cover strip to house them, but I havent found ANY with a spectrum I'm happy with yet. I'll see if I can get a couple of shots with the curtains drawn of my counter lighting. More on reddit.com
