Some images of a flat layout of a 36x72 alcove shower. Keep in mind, im not a pro, and want to keep this easy as possible. The tile manufacturer suggests only using a straight stack or a 1/3 offset - not a 1/2 offset. I'm not sure what the right way to do this is, no matter what it would not be symmetrical - if that matters.

Also note on my images the green boxes are showing the dimensions of the alcove area, which is about 2 inches taller than 7ft. The previous tiles didnt look good going up to the ceiling because the ceiling isnt completely level. So i prefer terminating the tile just short of the ceilling to get a nice straight line of tile on the top row. Should this edge be capped with schluter strip also?

I would say the bottom pic to reduce the slivers around the window but I'm not a pro either.

Tile to the ceiling - don’t stop short. Also, make sure that you know the ACTUAL size of the tile vs. the NOMINAL size (many tiles aren’t the exact dimensions shown). Many people don’t like step patterns. Have you thought about stacking the tiles (vertically or horizontally)? Maybe the tile isn’t flat enough - not sure if stacking would cause lippage to show. Or - maybe a vertical offset (do the 1/3 offset but vertically). How would the tiles end at ceiling/side walls/window if you did it that way? What does the tile look like? I do some interior design work - nice break from legal work.

April 2, 2023 - Thanks for the reply and this makes sense. However, in our shower, back wall is 5ft. We're using a 12" accent tile, with stacked field tiles on either side. Since our field tiles are 12x24, the back wall will be almost full tiles. The side walls will also be stacked.

I have 12 x 24 porcelain tile laid in a horizontal brick pattern in my shower. Less grout lines are great. Only wish I had requested the grout lines to be as small as possible. I squeegee the tile and glass after each use. Large grout lines interfere with the squeegee.
