I'm very new to the flooring industry and in my expeditions I've come across sheet vinyl which is available in 13'2" widths. I have had several customers requesting 15 foot sheet vinyl much like you can find with carpet goods. I've started to offer 13 foot goods as an alternative. Along the way, I cannot for the life of me figure out why 13'2" is an option and not 15'. On the manufacturing side, I can understand some of the difficulties of producing wider products but I'm stumped when it comes to understanding why 13'2" seems to be the "standard" for wide rolled sheet vinyl.
I'm sure there's some logical/outdated reason, but I can't seem to find the answer with Google searches.
Are there any experts who can give me a hint or full answer as to why sheet vinyl is available in a very specific width of 13'2"??
European produced vinyl generally comes in 2m, 3m and 4m widths. The latter being your 13’2”. I assume they don’t go wider with vinyl as it just wouldn’t be practical to handle.
Yep, it's metric. 4 meters. I actually like it it eliminates seams. I haven't seen any 15 ft vinyl in years. It's rare in residential carpet now, I'd guess less than 5% of styles have it available to order. 6ft goods is much more common.
I have a room that is 20x16' that I would like to put vinyl sheet flooring in (I'm poor, please don't judge). The problem is the sheets only come in 12' rolls. How do I minimize the seam? It's a kitchen, so we're talking high traffic area. I was thinking adding cabinets to each side, so that there's only 12 feet in between them and have the sheet only run up to the bottom of the cabinet. Problem with this is that there's a door along the 20' wall that would cause 2' gap between the end of the vinyl and the beginning of the door. I do not know what to do with this space. Any suggestions? I can add a blue print of the room if needed for visualization. Thank you.
