I purchased 1Password 6 standalone from the MAS and don't intend to upgrade to a subscription or 1Password 7 in the immediate future.
What happens if I need to reinstall 1Password 6, e.g. on a new Mac? Will I be able to use the 1Password 6.8.9 installer on the Agilebits website? How will it know that I have previously purchased the standalone MAS license and continue to sync my passwords via iCloud and/or Dropbox and/or 1Password account?
I'm making this post here to say that, YES! you can use 1password 6 standalone with dropbox to sync your passwords with 1password. I don't want to rant, but I was actually lied to by a 1Password customer support rep who said it was not possible and I needed to upgrade to 1P 7, well, I would have if I wasn't lied to.
So FYI for anyone who is hesitant going from a standalone license you purchased to their subscription model.
1password team, the below is not intended as a rant, it's intended as criticism and is basically some exit feedback from a somewhat disappointed customer.
This week I tried upgrading to 1Password7 on my Mac. Knowing, that although getting a one-off license would be tedious and extremely well hidden, it was still possible to do so as I was informed about this by one of your team members on your forum several months ago.
I've been using this software since 2013, buying new major upgrade licenses ever since and implementing it with buying multi-use licenses in families, friends and the company I worked for at the time.
I upgraded, tried to buy a license, but couldn't find it. Followed steps one of the MANY community threads on reddit and your own forums, to no avail.
Eventually I decided to mail the support team, who informed me that per June 15th 2021, it is no longer possible to do so. Which for me is a permanent showstopper to use this software once it inevitably stops working with newer macos versions.
I don't want or need your cloud storage to store my passwords who knows where in the world. I have my own secure encrypted cloud storage in a place I control.
Just a license to use the software with a vault file and not any of your cloud services will do just fine.
I get why you want to push a subscription service, but the way this is pushed over the past 2 years this has left a very poor view on your company to be honest.
The way the permanent license was so extremely hidden in the app to both apply an existing license or get a new license feels like doing business with a shady car salesman. My first encounter with this was when I promoted your product to non tech-savvy family and friends and they all ended up with a trial subscription that they DID NOT WANT to simply get the product working. Any license I bought for them needed multiple steps at this point to remove the account option and apply the license to use a file vault. The entire design around this leaves a very bad taste.
Any question over the past years on this permanent license where users on forums or other communities EXPLICITLY say they do not want the subscription service, is answered with a sales-pitch on how great this service really is and you should really try it.. Which is of no help at all.
To make it clear, any company that will queue up to be yet another one to try and siphon 5 to 10 dollars off my credit card per month is on my "do not use unless there's no other option" list. I absolutely HATE this business model as a consumer and I will do anything to not have to subject to it.
In the end I've now rolled back to 1password6. Which by the way was NOT very straightforward and took me an hour to get back working. To get the main app working with 1password mini again and even open my vault, I had to restore a backup after removing the 1password folders in my application support directory on macos and using one of the previous backups from those data folders.
Once this stops working with newer macos versions, I will move on to other password manager software. Your software is good, your business model and the way it's pushed is not (for me at least)
Dog. Companies need to make money to continue providing and improving services. You may not like the subscription model but it’s a viable model for any company providing ongoing improvements.
I switched off LastPass because they were acquired by Private Equity and we all know how that ends. Aren’t you limited to 1 device unless you pay now?
I switched to Bitwarden because it’s open source and free. It was fine. It does the trick but the UI is horrible compared to 1Password.
So now my family pays $60 a year. That’s ⅓ what a family Spotify plan costs.
Would you rather your password manager start serving you ads so they can make ends meet? This isn’t GNU.
I understand that you may not like the direction that 1password is heading towards a subscription based product. I see the benefits of the sub based service such as multi platform integration and a second to none secure encryption model to store and protect our data which helps me sleep at night. I would say that they are likely headed in the right direction because based on media reports this morning, more people are investing in 1Password and they have doubled there valuation since the last investment was made less than 2 years ago. I am sure there is a model for a license based program but maybe not one as profitable and as secure…
