Benefit of Windows App?
Hey there, welcome to 1Password! When using the desktop application of 1Password, on top of being able to easily manage and edit your items from the application instead of needing to use 1Password.com, you also have the ability to keep 1Password in your browser unlocked for however long the 1Password desktop application is unlocked. Additionally, because the 1Password desktop application is handling the unlocking, Windows Hello can be used to unlock 1Password for Windows and by extension, unlock 1Password in your browser as well. You're also able to manage large amounts of items in the desktop app (for example, copying a bunch of items from one vault to another). More on reddit.com
Why is a desktop app required for the browser extension?
1Password has two different browser extensions, and recently renamed them. 1Password X is just the main 1Password browser extension now (the name 1Password X went away) and the extension does not require any desktop app. The extension that does require the desktop app is now call 1Password Classic. You don't "need" to have it, no. I like it since it works well with the extension. This way I can have the 1password app open, open chrome, and it is ready to go. I say give it a try and see -- worst case you just go back to using the extension only :).

May 20, 2025 - Im trying to export my wife's passwords to a csv file and apparently I need to do it with the app, not with her usual access to 1Password using just the Firefox 1Password extension and whatever that opens when she starts 1Password that way. You do indeed need to install the desktop app to export your items.

How can I automatically send password to desktop app? | 1Password Community
February 28, 2023 - After I open an app that requires a password, I then have to switch windows to 1P, search and find the app in my 1P list, copy the password, then switch back to the app and paste the password. Phew!...that's a lot of work that can easily get screwed up and sometime does. This is a steepish learning curve for less computer savvy members of my family. Definitely install the 1Password desktop app. It really enhances the experience! As others have said, just try it and you will see the benefits. If you really do not, then you can uninstall it. I would agree with anyone who says, "Why can't this just all be in the extension?". However, I also find the 1Password Desktop App + Chrome Extension experience far better than the Lastpass experience was, so I accept that some things are just smoother in a Desktop App.
