Update: I apparently signed up for a family account already; when I tried to log in, I got an error "Can’t sign in. The deadline to update your sign-in method has passed. Ask your administrator to begin your account recovery, then wait for an email with next steps." I can log into my corporate account just fine. Answer from goolieg on reddit.com

If you ever decide to leave your employer, you can unlink the family account and restart the subscription before leaving; either way, you'll still be able to access the data in this family account even if your business account is shut down. I have a 1password business account, that I use for personal and contract work. I've recommended to one of the sites I work at that they sign up for 1password business as they have no good way of sharing passwords between a handful of staff.

I'm not going to sign into their business account as I have everything in mine, if we want to share passwords across both business accounts is the best way they have a shared vault and I have a shared vault or can we set a vault they own to read/write for guests or is there a better way?

Hi all,

I have been playing with both 1Password Personal and 1Password Business trails and I was wondering, does anyone find paying 7.99$/month, for 1Password Business with only 1 member, worth it?

I'm asking this since 1Password Business includes a complimentary 1Passsword Family account (costing 4.99$/month). Assuming paying 3$/month more is fine with me and I might use the 1Password Business account with only 1 member for my work, does anyone find the additional features, present in the 1Password Business account, worth to be used even with only 1 member?

Not sure if the questions make sense but any comment or shared experience is more than welcomed! Thanks.

I should first mention that no matter what you pick, if you feel like you've chosen the wrong option, you can always change your account type in the future. 1Password accounts tend to be pretty flexible, and so there's not a ton of pressure on picking the right thing right away.

With that said, if you're the only person using 1Password, this will really come down to what you want out of it. As u/djasonpenney mentions, 1Password Business comes with a lot of additional features that are aimed primarily at administration. If you don't plan on using those features, then 1Password Teams may be a better option for you at work, since it's aimed at smaller work environments. So this will really come down to what sort of work you do and how you feel you'll be using 1Password in the future.

I don't usually recommend using 1Password Families for work, mostly because it's not really aimed at being used in a work environment. And if you're going to be the only one using the account at all, as you seem to be indicating here, then a personal 1Password account for individuals with multiple vaults, with some specifically for work, might also do the trick.

Feel free to write in and ask about it.

I opted for that. 1-person Business account, but have shared with (so far) 3 family members. One I share a single vault with , the other two are private to themselves.

I just thought this made more sense..and I don't really take advantage of the VIP support (but I could...although between reddit and the 1P forum it's been pretty good!!). Price wasn't an issue at the extra few dollars, and it's a business expense.

My home computer is custom-built and significantly beefy-er than my work laptop, so I prefer to use it. My work just got 1Password to manage our passwords, but I'm hesitant to add it on my personal computer.

What data will my employers be able to see?

Can they see what sites I visit? Can they see what I download? (Chrome says I need to allow the software to manage my downloads).

Just how bad of an idea is it, if at all?

Hi there

I have been using 1Password with my company and I’m very impressed. I current have the iOS app downloaded and I’m signed into my companies account.

I want to create a personal family account for me and my family using 1Password families. How will that interfere with my work account? Will I have to constantly switch between my work account and family account on my phone by logging in and out etc? Or does the 1Password app support multiple accounts eg a work account (which I don’t manage or pay for) and a personal account (which I do manage and pay for)

Apologies if this is confusing, I’ve tried to rewrite it a few times and this is the best I could come up with

Cheers

r/1Password on Reddit: Why I can never use 1Password in a business environment (and I really want to!)
January 28, 2022 -

Consider this scenario in a business environment:

  1. User has access to sensitive corporate passwords via 1Password.

  2. User has a strong password, but they (stupidly.. as users do) Use that same password on all their personal and potentially even work accounts.

  3. User’s device is compromised and hackers get their 1Password file.

  4. Hackers search hacked database for compromised sites with users email.

  5. Hackers decrypt offline 1Password database.

This is not a far fetched scenario and there are other scenarios where an offline database is a risk.

Has 1Password ever considered or have plans to create an online only mode? This is one thing LastPass does better than 1Password. This would insure 100% that access would terminated as there wouldn’t be any potential for offline databases to be scattered around on devices.

More databases = greater attack surface = less secure

Edit:

To add some justification that my scenario proposed this is a very real threat, consider the recent credentials stuffing attack on last pass. This was against users online databases, where MFA, ip whitelisting and other conditional access measures could be put in place by a business to protect again this, however, none of these measures apply if the hacker obtained access to a local 1Password database. This type of attack on individual users offline database is next and is exactly what I’m describing.

This could be mitigated as follows: First, you’d use a single-sign on (SSO) service that only allows logging in from approved company devices and networks, preventing sign-ins from personal laptops and desktops. Second thing would be to “manage” or “supervise” the 1Password app with an Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution. Supervising/managing the app allows its data to be remote wiped should the user be terminated, or the device lost. You could then either allow sign ins to your SSO provider from mobile devices with a valid MDM profile, or tunnel 1Password over a VPN to a network trusted by the SSO. There’s pros and cons to either approach. Also, using the SSO with 1Password would allow setting password policies for the business account to make it more secure. It can also be used to force regular password rotation.

With 1Password Business, you can actually enforce a password policy , among other things, to prevent this situation. Two-factor authentication is also enforceable by administrators if they want to be doubly-sure that an employee with somewhat "lax" views on security won't be a weak link. There's also Advanced Protection , which may be worth looking into. And as with any shared 1Password account, it's important to manage what things can be accessed by which people. This is actually one of the major focuses of 1Password Business. There are certain security features that fit well with businesses that don't really translate to individuals, and there are people working on that sort of stuff within 1Password now. Any additional security features that do fit with individuals are likely to be seen everywhere, but that won't be everything.

I’ve heard that it isn’t good to sign into your personal vault on your work PC.

I say “I’ve heard” cause I work IT and my computer has ZERO monitoring software on it… might as well be my personal laptop but it was given to me by my employer so obv isn’t.

I’m trying to adjust what I do and limit the number of apps that I have to uninstall next year before I move companies (moving from FL to Seattle) and trying to make sure that IF I do forget something (which I doubt I will but never know) it isn’t something super important like my personal vault.

So, not sure what I should do. I currently use BW free for work + BW premium for personal and share an organization between them for accounts I’ll access both places. The problem I have with that though is that these premium features:

  • 2FA Codes

  • Attachments

Are not available on my work PC or my org. Setting up the org account is $40/year (too expensive since it is just me) and setting up the work would make it $20/year which is the same price as 1P (with a student discount) and since I’m considering it anyway I’m curious how people use 1P for work + personal.

Your use of personal 1Password data on your work device will have less to do with it technically belonging to someone else and more to do with how trustworthy you believe the device is. As you mention, some people have software installed by their employers that makes dealing with personal data on those devices less than comfortable. For those unable to trust that their employers are granting them a level of privacy, it can even be somewhat dangerous to access personal 1Password data on those devices. If the device that you're using is as good as yours and simply provided to you and owned by someone else, and your plan upon returning it is to completely wipe it before sending it away, I'd say it's probably fine to be using your personal 1Password data on it. If you have some reason that you feel doing so may not be fully trustworthy, feel free to go into some detail about that and we can discuss it. Personally, I keep my work laptop set up specifically for work with only my 1Password Business account through AgileBits, and my personal laptop(s) set up for personal use with only my personal 1Password Families account. I don't mix those things. But frankly I have more computers in my house than any human being should, and so I don't expect that my situation is the default.

I have a laptop provided by work but similarly, no software on it from them. I have a vault for work. I keep it all in there. When I leave, I can export all password to a CSV and remove 1password. They won’t be able to lock me out so it’s not an issue about them having my data. They can’t get the device from me without me sending it in. So, I don’t see a risk.

Hi all. Long term 1password family user here working for a small 3 person company using LastPass. Oh dear!

So we’re moving away from LastPass and I’m wondering if 1password would be best for us rather than bitwarden but looking at the pricing for bitwarden’s teams account ($3 per user/month vs 1password’s $19.95 a month for up to 10 people) we might end up going to bitwarden. ($9 vs $19 a month)

Is there any benefit or additional security that 1password offers that could sway the company to move to 1password instead?

The other option is a 1password families account for $5 a month but I think there’d probably be some T&Cs issues?

Business wise, there is a single owner, a single employee (me) and an as and when helper for the bookkeeping. So not exactly a massive business….

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I’m in favor of using password managers such as BitWarden with a secure master and MFA. I work as a software engineer at my company and have been wanting to pitch the idea that we would benefit from getting a business account(s) for our some 500+ users. This way IT can manage the policies for the passwords and we can have everything a little more centralized for the user base and all of our numerous passwords being used can be longer, more complex and overall more secure while still being readily available and easily changed by the user. What are some reasons a business would not want to do something like this, and what would be some hurdles that I would want to consider before bringing this up?

EDIT: if you have recommendations other than BitWarden I’d also appreciate hearing about them and why, thank you!

I mostly use my own Mac for work because I cannot work out how to use my personal subscription to 1Password on my work-administered Mac, so I have no access to my usual passwords. My work machine has sat in a closet for 5 years, and I've just been offered an upgrade(!), but without access to 1Password, it seems to have the functionality of a Chromebook. Am I missing something?

- Is using the 1Password browser extension on a work-administered Mac safe?

- Is there anything I need to be aware of in terms of setup and keeping access to my 1Password account secure?

(My workplace keeps our machines locked down tight with minimal software on them, but they won't provide a password manager 'for lack of budget', so we all use the same password for everything and never change it!)

Note: Should add I had a good google before asking this but it seems similar questions are years old now and things change fast, so asking here.

I run a small business with 2 other people, so no IT department other than whoever it good at this particular thing. All relatively tech savvy.

We need to beef up our security and I want everyone to switch to 1Password. I've been using it for over a year now and fully "get it", so will set the others up for them, as it is a bit daunting for a first timer.

Only thing I dont know is I have no experience using it on iOS. I have android phone and occasionally have issues when Google or Samsung password managers will try to get in the way, but I can deal with that. If they have similar issues, I fear they wont use it.

See this is the issue, I am having to argue with them stuff like how using the same password for everything is a bad idea, and now we have serious money coming through the company we could get targetted. I have no power over them, so if they find this too inconvenient, they'll just not use it and we'll be at risk.

TL;DR - is 1password on iOS working seamlessly and easily integrated enough that disinterested business partners would actually use it?

r/NordPass on Reddit: 1Password vs. NordPass for Managing Both Personal and Business Passwords: Which is Better?
June 25, 2024 -

I've been doing some research for several hours and I've narrowed down my options for a business password manager to 1Password and NordPass. I've read a lot of great things about 1Password, but I've also noticed that NordPass is becoming a leading contender, with many people suggesting it's even better than 1Password. Opinions are divided, but there seems to be a trend among specialists leaning towards NordPass.

Personally, I prefer NordPass's design, but I appreciate 1Password's mission and the direction they are heading, along with their long-standing presence in the market. I'm planning to not only set up a password manager for my business but also migrate my personal passwords from my old manager to a new one.

My main concern is which of these two tools allows for a smoother switching between my personal and business vaults. I want to know if NordPass or 1Password is better suited for this kind of seamless switching. I'll be spending most of my time in my personal vault, but occasionally, I'll need to switch to the business vault.

Additionally, autofill functionality is crucial for me, and I've heard mixed reviews about both. Some say NordPass is better, while others prefer 1Password.

Does anyone have experience with both tools and can provide some insight on which one offers a better experience for managing both personal and business passwords, particularly with seamless switching and autofill performance?

Thanks in advance!

I have accounts with both 1Password and NordPass. Both are group (family) accounts, so not business per se, but perhaps similar. I've been with 1Password for a very long time (10 years?) and with NordPass for the last couple of years. I also have an active account with Bitwarden, and have used LastPass, Dashlane, Keeper, and many others on and off. Note that NordPass's non-business accounts do NOT support generation of TOTPs, while 1Password does (ditto Bitwarden and Keeper). I use Aegis and 2FAS for TOTP and am happy to have this separated, but I admit that getting it from your password manager is convenient. I think NordPass business may support 2FA token generation, if that matters to you. Differences in the way they're set up might matter to you. 1Password relies on the secret key as well as a password/passphrase. The secret key means that you can have a shorter master password if you like and you can probably dispense with 2FA on your 1Password account as well; but it makes accessing your account on new machines awkward, and it also complicates accessing several different accounts (which I need to do sometimes). NordPass has a two-part login that requires occasionally logging into your Nord account and then logging into your vault and that's a hassle but an infrequent one. Pros and cons both ways. I believe they are equally secure, as a practical matter. 1Password has a desktop app as well as web access. NordPass is moving to an exclusively web-based product. NordPass's web app is (in my judgment) very good. But 1Password does have an advantage if you wish to use it to store and access apps outside your browser or if you expect to need to get passwords on those (presumably rare) occasions when you lack internet access. 1Password has been a leader in this field and if that matters to you, well, there's that. I read 1Password's blog fairly regularly as they have good info there. But NordPass has good support for passkeys. NordPass is my primary password manager now. 1Password is excellent but I much prefer NordPass's clean and attractive design, and while I maintain my 1Password account I don't use it much any more. 1Password for me has too many options. This is however no doubt a matter of personal taste and I don't think you can go wrong with either one of them. Actually, properly using any decent password manager (1Password, NordPass, Bitwarden, Keeper, Dashlane, Proton Pass et al.) means you're ahead of the crowd. Even LastPass is probably okay, if you use it intelligently although I cannot recommend it given the company's demonstrated incompetence and the fact that there are so many excellent alternatives. One last note: People here complain about having had problems with NordPass. I don't doubt these reports. But I can tell you from long experience with many different products that they all have problems from time to time.

So I have a family 1password account and it works great. We have a few vaults including one I share with my wife.

I am doing work for a small organization that needs, badly, to improve security. I want to introduce 1password there. I have some responsibility in that organization and my hope is that once they setup a vault or two, that they can share a vault with me. They are very small and would probably have three 1password users, I would be the 4th.

What are my vault sharing options?

  • can they share a vault with me without me needing a second 1Password identity?

  • would I have to create a second 1password account for sharing with the organization?

Just trying to understand how two "organizations" can share.

Hey All,

I've been evaluating switching over from LastPass for Business to 1Password Business (and Bitwarden Enterprise), and was hoping to get some clarification on a couple of things.

  • With LastPass Enterprise, we had SSO implemented w/ Okta, meaning our users weren't required to enter Master Passwords when signing in. While I'm not a fan of the security implications of this, it's what our users are now used to. My upper management feels using master passwords again is a step backwards. I was happy to see that 1Password w/ SSO has been announced, but there wasn't a whole lot of info around timeframes and how to join the public beta. Can anyone provide any additional info?

  • It appears that the Security Policies do not include controls for things like Auto-lock & Clipboard. Am I missing something, or are those not centrally manageable polices?

  • My management brought up the fact that while we can specify length and complexity of passwords, our SOC2 password polices state that passwords must be rotated. I know that the effectiveness of password rotation has been debated, but the fact of the matter is that it's part of our policy (and part of other enterprises, I would think). Any way to enforce that?

Really enjoying 1Password so far, I just need to get over these hurdles. Thanks all, and stay secure!

As a follow up to anyone looking for these answers, I finally heard back from 1Password Support and here's what they told me: I was happy to see that 1Password w/ SSO has been announced, but there wasn't a whole lot of info around timeframes and how to join the public beta. Can anyone provide any additional info? Unlock with Okta SSO is coming soon . Previously we shared the feature in a closed beta, but we were so excited about it that we’re opening it up for the public to preview in mid-February. Get ready to evaluate, test, and provide feedback for this feature leading up to its general availability by the end of Q1. The public preview will include testing on our desktop (Linux, Windows, and macOS) and mobile apps (iOS and Android). So you can try it out on whatever platform you’re most comfortable using. This sneak peek will be available for all 1Password Business customers, including trials. Make your workflows more efficient with just a few clicks. Other customers are loving its ease of use, and we know you will too. If you are interested in learning more about it I can loop in your CSR to make ensure a proper follow up when the release takes place. It appears that the Security Policies do not include controls for things like Auto-lock & Clipboard. Am I missing something, or are those not centrally manageable policies? We do have the option for turning Auto-lock through mobile device management software to enforce stricter controls within 1Password. This enforcement also includes configuring the various lock settings, however, not every 1Password platform supports this right now. While for the clipboard we have some settings for your copied passwords for apps that do not support the auto fill feature. Below are the links to the URL resources for each of those features: About mobile device management Copy and fill passwords into apps that don’t work with 1Password My management brought up the fact that while we can specify length and complexity of passwords, our SOC2 password policies state that passwords must be rotated. I know that the effectiveness of password rotation has been debated, but the fact of the matter is that it's part of our policy (and part of other enterprises, I would think). Any way to enforce that? We do not have the password rotation as offering in 1Password, however, we have seen similar request and do value the feedback we receive. But presently you would not have a feature that will allow you to enforce the password rotation within 1Password. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
