I'm really enjoying playing around with 1Password 8 so far. I had a question about installing the Safari extension. With 1P7 the Safari extension was bundled with the app. But it looks like with 1P8 this is going to change and require installing the Safari extension from the App Store.

For Safari on macOS I have two Safari extensions, 1Password, and 1Password for Safari. There's also a 1Password for Safari.app in my Applications folder. If I launch this app it brings me to Safari settings, where the 1Password extension is enabled but the 1Password for Safari is not enabled.

Why are there two different extensions and which one is the correct one to be using?

Hey, u/JE163 . 1Password 7 for Mac had it's own built in extension for Safari. 1Password 8 uses a separate one you can pick up here: https://support.1password.com/getting-started-browser/ You can absolutely use 1Password 8 within Safari without an extension by leveraging Universal Autofill, but you won't get all the inline menus for password suggestions, saving, filling, etc that you will if you have the extension installed as well. https://support.1password.com/mac-universal-autofill/ Let us know how you get on and if you have any other questions at all.

If you wish to use Safari, yes. Safari extensions must come from the Mac App Store. Since 1Password 8 is no longer in the Mac App Store you have to use this separate extension.

For many years I've used LastPass on all my computers, including my work-provided laptop.

I've always used the LP browser plugin and had no issues.

Since changing to 1Password there appears to be no way for me to log in to 1Password on the work machine without having the full 1Password app installed ?

(the work laptop is non-admin and we users are not able to install programs & apps ourselves... standard corporate device policy etc...)

I am using and enjoying 1Password on my other three personal Windows & Mac computers and all my iOS devices.

On the work laptop I have the Chrome plugin installed, but when I try to login, it takes me to a web page and asks me for the User + MPW + Secret Code. I provide these... and it says something like "We're unable to log you into 1Password" *I'm not in front of that computer right now... it's Sunday :D

I've tried different internet connections (Office, Home, Work VPN, non-work-VPN, even 5G mobile data connection) I've tried different browsers on the work machine... Edge & Chrome and Firefox... no luck.

The only difference between the work laptop and all my other computers and devices is the installation of the 1Password app.

So I presume this means 1Password requires the installation of the app ?

It doesn’t need the full app, as this is how we deploy it to our users at work. Just the plug-in. As why you can’t log in, that’s a different question and probably the only hurdle to take.

No it doesn't, I'm using the plugin without the app on some of my devices. Are you using a less common browser with additional blocking features, other browser extensions or some anti-virus software that might interfere?

I have been a 1Password customer since 2012 according to my email records. At that time and for probably the next 5-7yr, 1Password worked best on MacOS and with Safari browser.

But now in 2024 it feels like Safari is the worst browser to use with 1Password on both MacOS and iOS. I use 1Password all the time and because it only works about half the time in Safari on my iPad and Mac, I am forced to use another browser.

Is the Safari extension not given attention because 1Password now has more of a business focus rather than consumer and most businesses are using Chrome?

Depends on what you're experiencing. With v8, there are definitely some behaviors and workflows that I feel have gotten worse and do not work correctly compared to v7. Such as: After unlocking when using the autofill shortcut and 1Password does not recognize what website you're on(was never an issue with v7) 1P unlock window hiding behind apps instead of being in front(not a safari issue, but still) 1P wanting to show it's suggestion when it shouldn't Or even the case where the suggestion was not showing near the field on my iPhone I don't know if Chrome or other browsers are having these issues as I rarely use them, but they are definitely annoying.

Weird. Using 1P and safari on an iPhone and two different Mac’s with no issues.
