r/Dell on Reddit: Latitude 7410 Flashes 3 Amber and 3 White Only When Entering Recovery After Repair
November 17, 2024 -

I got a Latitude 7410 with a broken keyboard, touchpad, and bad battery, but it would still boot to bios. So, I took it apart and replaced the keyboard, palmrest, touchpad, and battery. However, after replacing everything, it would not boot.

I was able to get into recovery by holding esc and ctrl, but the screen would not turn on and the light would flash 3 amber then 3 white. I checked the connections to the motherboard and reseated the lcd connectors. Is there anything that could be done, or is the motherboard damaged or something? I tried hooking up a flash drive with the bios to see if it would automatically load the bios, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

I am using an nvme from another machine that was upgraded, so it would have an OS. Not to mention I would think that it would at least boot to bios. Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Looks like it's giving the code for the recovery since it's not found on the boot drive. I'm more worried about why it's not starting now.

@JessWong666 those codes are uniform across the last few generations of Latitudes. To get an accurate diagnostics sequence it's recommended that you try a diagnostic boot by holding down the Fn key and powering on the system. The system will then flash the power button in sequence to advise what fault its encountering. Blinking Pattern Possible Problem Problem Description Amber White 2 1 CPU CPU failure 2 2 BIOS ROM failure System board failure (included BIOS corruption or ROM error) 2 3 Memory No memory/ RAM detected 2 4 Memory Memory/ RAM failure 2 5 Memory Invalid memory installed 2 6 Chipset System board/ Chipset error 2 7 LCD LCD failure 3 1 RTC power failure CMOS battery failure 3 2 PCI/ Video PCI or Video card/ chip failure 3 3 BIOS recovery 1 Recovery image not found 3 4 BIOS recovery 2 Recovery image found but invalid   If you are currently encountering this issue I'll drop you a private message to get your tag details. If your product is in warranty, you can easily reach out to tech support right here. Just click the Get Help Now button at the bottom right corner of the page. The button is marked with a help icon for easy recognition as per the picture below: Now, if you prefer to troubleshoot your system on your own, please note that a pattern of 2 amber lights and 4 white lights indicates a Memory/RAM failure. Follow these steps to resolve the issue: Shutdown Your Device: Ensure your device is powered off completely. Disconnect Power: Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if applicable). Re-seat the Memory Modules: Open the access panel to your device's memory modules. Carefully remove and then re-seat each memory module. Ensure they are properly secured in their slots. Check for Loose Connections: Examine other internal connections, ensuring all components are securely in place. Power On: Reconnect the power adapter and battery, then power on your device. Observe if the issue persists. If reseating the memory doesn't fix the issue, try performing a Hard Reset:  Turn off your computer. Disconnect the power adapter from your computer. Remove the base cover. Disconnect the battery cable. Press and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds to drain the flea power. Install the battery. Install the base cover. Connect the power adapter to your computer. Turn on your computer. Important:  If the pattern of 2 amber and 4 white lights started after a RAM upgrade, it is likely that the RAM is not compatible with the system. Important²: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is possible that the motherboard may be faulty and require replacement. We recommend contacting technical support by clicking Get Help Now in the bottom right corner of the page, or reaching out to a trusted technician for further assistance. January 18, 2020 -

Does anyone know what 8 white followed by 2 amber flashing diagnostic lights mean? On the diagnostic reference sheets they only go up to 7 white 2 amber.

The device is a 7390 2 in 1 xps 13in, apart from the constant flashing I'm not noticing anything actually wrong with the laptop.

r/Dell on Reddit: Precision 7550 - Memory Issue - 2 Amber 5 White. Multiple Machines - Different Ram Slot fixed
May 17, 2023 -

So Today I had 2 different 7550s not turn on, both had the 2 amber 5 white error code. So we tried taking the ram out and testing one stick at a time and in different slots underneath and no go.

The fix was to move both ram sticks to under the keyboard and then it boots with no issues.

Its weird that I had two different laptops in two different offices experience this same issue today. Is there any bios updates that pushed out that could have caused this?

Your Dell laptop is showing a diagnostic blink code: 3 amber flashes followed by 5 white flashes, repeating in a loop. This code means the system failed to complete its startup self-check (POST). Depending on your model, the most common causes are: Memory (RAM) not detected or seated improperly - most common cause CMOS battery / Real-Time Clock (RTC) power loss Corrupted BIOS firmware Power rail or motherboard fault - less common The good news: most users can fix this at home in under 30 minutes. Follow the steps in order and stop as soon as your laptop boots. Before You Open the Laptop Work on a hard, non-static surface Touch metal first to discharge static Have a small Phillips screwdriver ready Refer to your model's service manual at dell.com/support 1. Hard Reset  Clears residual power — fixes many cases instantly. Unplug adapter, remove battery (if removable) Hold power button for 30 seconds Reconnect power and try booting 2. Reseat the RAM - Most Common Fix  Unscrew the memory access panel on the bottom Push the side clips outward — RAM stick pops up Firmly press it back in until clips snap Two sticks? Test each one alone to find a bad module 3. Reset CMOS  Unplug everything (adapter, USBs, peripherals) Hold power button for 60 seconds Plug in and retry 4. BIOS Recovery  For corrupted firmware. Unplug the adapter Hold CTRL + Esc, then plug adapter back in Keep holding until the recovery screen appears → select Recover BIOS 5. Run Built-In Diagnostics  Power on → tap F12 repeatedly → select Diagnostics Next Steps If the issue persists after these steps, it may indicate a motherboard failure or a deeper power subsystem fault. We recommend contacting our support team for further assistance. You can use the Get Help Now chat feature located at the bottom right corner of this page. Or, you may reach out to a trusted technician for a hands-on diagnosis. Please see this video for general No Post Troubleshooting.

It is true that it's not documented, but historical posts have shown it to be a fault on one of the power rails on the system board - the only real solution is to replace the board.
