r/stylus on Reddit: Which 2 in 1 Laptop Should I Buy? (other than Surface Pro)
December 3, 2023 -

Hi everyone. I was looking for 2 in 1 laptop that fit these requirements:-

• Portable

• Has a stylus for drawing

• Windows OS and fast enough for everyday task like Blender (non rendering), Photoshop/Clip Studio, web browsing and watching videos

So far I have found:-

• Acer Spin 5.

• Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 360

• Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8

Anyone has tried the above laptops before? How does it feel? Would you recommend it?

I have a Lenovo Yoga C940 15.6", that I bought in 2020. It has touch and works with a stylus. With some research and experimentation, I found that it uses the AES 2.0 stylus protocol, which senses tilt. When paired with the Lenovo Precision Pen 2, I get pretty good lines with very little diagonal line wobble, and the tilt angle and tilt direction work as well. I bought it, on sale, at Best Buy for $900, back in 2020. For that money, I got an i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB NVME SSD. Plus two thunderbolt 3 ports and a USB 3.0 A port. I immediately replaced the 1 TB SSD with a 2 TB SSD. Which is incredibly easy to do. You just remove some easily visible screws from the bottom cover and the m.2 slot is right there, easy to see. Oh, and it comes with a little tiny stylus that slips into a hole in the bottom of the laptop, and constantly charges there. So you always have at least a tolerable stylus with you, though it does not sense tilt. The problem is: Lenovo, along with all the other laptop makers, are terrible at making it clear what stylus features you're going to get, what stylus protocol the laptop uses, which of their pens actually work with that stylus, and what features you get when you pair that pen with that laptop. Lenovo has started including words such as "stylus" and "tilt" in their marketing copy for some of their laptops. But it is unclear whether or not those are the only laptops that work with styluses and sense tilt. Asus is now making Surface Pro clones. So you might want to look into those if you want something more portable than a 15.6 in diagonal laptop. In the end, I really like this laptop. Although it did take me till just recently to figure out exactly which stylus worked the best. I cut out a felt pad to lay down underneath the laptop when I am using it in tablet mode, so that the key tops don't get all scratched up from sliding them around on the desk.

I have an ASUS Zenbook flip OLED and it has an absolutely pristine screen. It doesn't come with a pen in a lot of regions tho.

r/stylus on Reddit: Ranking 2 in 1 Windows laptops for stylus support
June 1, 2025 -

Not many laptop reviews say more than a few words about the stylus/digitiser functionality. So I wanted to ask a community who would know how they'd rank the major brands on this (Windows only).

I'm looking to buy a used 2 in 1 as a travel computer. One thing I want is a good writing experience for note taking and annotating. So knowing about the brands in general is helpful, but if anyone has experience with the specific models I've looked at I'd love to hear about it.

Samsung: Galaxy Book 2 360, Flex 2 5g

Lenovo: Thinkpad X13 Yoga Gen 2/3, X1 Yoga Gen 6, X1 Yoga Titanium Gen 1 (maybe Thinkbook 14s G2 or one of the Yoga 7/9 models?)

Also considering Dell, HP, and Asus. I've looked at the Surface, but for the same kind of price as the above I'd be looking at a 7 Pro, which seems comparatively outdated

January 11, 2025 -

An older person at work is transitioning from writing regular notes and reports via pen to a digital environment. They aren't really tech-savvy. My idea was to get them a 2-in-1 laptop so they could just continue writing as they were and use programs to turn handwriting to actual text.

Does anyone have experience with this setup? Is it tolerable to write on 2-in-1 laptops for extended periods of time? A lot of apps have the ability to draw in them (i.e. Notes), but some handwriting to text seems to be hit or miss. Also if anyone has info about support for non-English character languages or Cyrillic would be nice

Location - US Budget - $1.5k max Use - embroidery digitizing (Inkscape, Ink/Stitch)

I purchased an embroidery machine about 6 months ago and I’m starting to understand how important it is to have really good digitized embroidery files. Now that I’m getting the hang of it, it’s time to switch from creating my designs in Procreate on my iPad Pro and transferring them to my PC, to getting the job done strictly on a laptop. It would remove a lot of clunkiness and extra steps, and cut down the time to create a file tremendously!

I come to you looking for a laptop with great stylus pen precision. I’m a little spoiled with the iPad stylus and the capability to take it anywhere, so it would be helpful if I can find something to a similar quality. I’m avoiding plug-in drawing pads for PC, and if I can, I’d like to avoid a laptop that only can use basic squishy tip pens. I am no graphics designer, but I’m sure a lot of you can relate to how many nodes need adjusted exactly where they need to be in a tiny area, and it’s crucial for embroidery files since one minor out of place node can cause thread nesting, broken needles, and a terrible result to the finished product.

A 2-in-1 laptop that includes a good configured stylus would be ideal… what led me to this decision was because Inkscape does not have an app, and because mouse and keyboard is not my strong suit artistically. Also, the last time I embroidered a patch, it was on the machine for about 85 minutes and suddenly a capital E that was stitched turned into what looked like Chain Chomp from Mario 64 from the front and back of the fabric. Honestly, it was my fault that it happened and I had zero cool when I saw it, but I chalked it up to not having a stylus. It was a dramatic moment but that tipping point has now brought me here. (I’m fine now btw lol)

Thanks!

I mean if your a artist or teacher I understand but, a LOT of people want this ability for some reason??? I just don’t understand why. Fine, I lied, I actually used the touchscreen to open tabs. But that was when I didn’t have a mouse. I got my own laptop now and like it seems so stupid. Why waste money for a function you aren’t going to use? If anyone actually uses a 2 in 1 post a reply below.

Edit: So basically everyone uses it to take notes etc. Should’ve expected that. I mean I use my iPad sometimes to take notes but a Laptop, for me is wayyyyy to big for that type of deal.

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    £1300

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes - As long as device is in excellent/ Very good condition with little battery degradation

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Must be a 2-in-1 with decent battery life. Preferably at a core i7 or Ryzen 7 performance level. Preference for 12th gen intel (for performance) or 6000 series Ryzen (for RDNA 2 igpu and efficiency)

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Preference would be that the device is somewhat thin and light, but not overly concerned if other requirements are met.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    Preferably 13-15 inches

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Web browser (Chrome etc), Microsoft office suite (Excel and OneNote particularly), basic photo editing

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 1080p resolution, medium settings in Minecraft, FIFA, Rocket League

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like to be able to write notes on this device, so good palm rejection/ hand writing experience with a stylus/ active pen. Good battery life that lasts around 6 hours of mixed use (writing using stylus, web browsing, watching YT/Netflix, using Microsoft office suite)

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Ideal device would be a surface pro w/ 16gb RAM and Ryzen 6800u processor and at 512gb SSD /nvme. That would be the dream combination of form factor, performance and battery life that I’m looking for but it doesn’t exist.

In summary: Good battery life (>6 hrs of real world use) Good Pen support/ experience Ryzen 6000 series preferred for igpu and efficiency

Hello, I want to buy my first e-divice primarily for thaking notes and maybe a little graphic design. First of all, I choose 2in1 laptop because it is basically the same price as tablet or e-ink tablet, but with greater performance and probably will be in use longer. I was basically wondering between: Lenovo ThinkPad X13 gen 2 (i7 10th gen) Lenovo yoga 7 (i7 11th gen) Microsoft SurfacePro 7 (i7 10th gen) Dell latitude 5310 2-in-1 (i7 10th gen) And while on performance they are pretty much the same, I was wondering how they compare for drawing/note taking and writing experience overall. Is the screen more important or the stylus. How big is the difference? I am planning to be using it for several ours a day writing.

I'm studying nursing too and I currently have the microsoft studio laptop 1st gen 256gb, I got it refurbished for $800 at the microsoft official site but idk if they still in stock. Pros: I get to draw, write, feels premium, barely lagging, stream on netflix and youtube, backlit keyboard, great speakers, great brigthtness, and zero scratches/dents. Cons: A bit heavy compare to surface pro, I'm looking for a screen protector but I'm afraid it'll damage it, battery should last 3-6 hours depending on how heavy you use it. The fan on the sides are teenyy tiny loud but you won't be able to notice it that much. Since I got an ipad for note-taking and games, I only use the laptop for drawing, nerflix, research, saving files for the nursing program, college emails, and digital textbooks. So that 256gb was a bit too much 🤣 Also, those budget 2-in-1 laptops you see in lenovos, dell, and HP, their hinges can be worn out and break easily, bad camera and a bit laggy too with loud fan and overheats and weak brightness nits. Surface Pro is your only option if u want detachable, but I suggest saving $1,300 for both a laptop and a tablet/ipad separately for nursing because it'll be easier to use the whole laptop screen for just the digital textbooks instead of using half the screen to take notes and half to jot down from.

r/SuggestALaptop on Reddit: 2-in-1 with pen support and long battery life
November 17, 2023 -

My computer is a 4 years old Surface Pro 7 Windows tablet that I enjoy, but its battery life is currently around 1.5 hours even with minimal load. Even brand new, its battery life was my #1 complaint. So while I don't have a current critical need, I'd like a few option to keep an eye on for great sales. The best candidates I've found so far seems to be around Lenovo Yoga 7i and HP Envy, but I'm pretty ignorant as far as laptop go so I'd happily accept recommendations!

MUST

- Pen support: I need proper pen support. It doesn't have to be professional-tier, but it should be at least reasonable (My Surface Pro 7 fit the Microsoft pen 1 fitting there). Big bonus if there's actually a convenient way to carry the pen with it.

- Good battery life: I'm very rarely using my devices near a power outlet, and miserable battery life is my #1 complaint with my current computer.

- Windows: There's some things that are Windows-only that I want to use it on.

- 2-1 flipable laptop or separable tablet: I use the pen enough that I really want to be able to have the device in 'tablet' mode. I like the Surface form factor but I believe that good battery life with a Windows tablet doesn't exist, so I'm willing to branch out to a 2-1 360 hinged laptop.

- 16 gb Ram: I want to use it for multiple years; 8 seems not 'future proof' enough, and 32 feels way overkill.

Secondary considerations

- Screen brightness: I use my devices with very low brightness when indoors, but I also use them outdoors which requires a lot higher brightness. It's not a must since I can use other devices outdoors, but it'd be a big plus if it's at least usable under shade outdoors.

- Performance and light gaming: My Surface Pro 7 is sufficient for the majority of things I want to do with it. So if it's at least slightly better than my Surface Pro 7 i5-1035, I'd likely be fine with it for quite some time.

- Price: I know it obviously won't be cheap and I don't want something that'd just belong in the dump 6 months later, but I don't want to pay multiple thousands of dollars either for a beastly machine since it'd be basically wasted on me.

I don't care about the screen refresh rate (60 hz is perfectly fine with me), I don't need perfect rgb coverage (I don't do professional work) and I don't need to run AAA games at all or run games in general on High settings.

What are your recommendations that wouldn't be junk yet wouldn't be overkill for my needs? I'm not biased toward any brands, and I'd happily take multiple recommendations so that I can keep my eyes peeled for a great deal on one of them.

Thank you very much!

I currently use a Galaxy Chromebook, which is almost perfect for my needs. I'm posting here because the Linux VM performance is really abysmal for me and installing native Linux is a pain on this device.

It has some other problems like battery life, but it does hit my main points of being a 2-in-1 (screen rotates 360 degrees) with nice build quality and internal stylus storage.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

The lower the better. I do not have a specific budget in mind. My current laptop is a Galaxy Chromebook that I got used for $400. I can see myself paying up to $2k for the right machine.

Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would like a 2-in-1 with good battery life and nice build quality. I especially want a nice keyboard.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Unimportant.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I want under 13.5" and under 13" is even better. I've had a 16:10 13.5" laptop and that was too big for me.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just normal command line tools as well as Firefox and VS Code.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A nice keyboard, 2-in-1 (screen that rotates 360 degrees), and 10+ hours of battery life are the most important to me. I also want internal stylus storage.

A reasonable GPU (for computing not gaming) and a fanless setup would be dream features. A slightly taller screen aspect ratio like 16:10 or 3:2 would be incredible too. OLED is also nice.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~$2000 USD but could spend a bit more if the perfect thing is out there (USA)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I’d be open to a refurb but only if the specs/hardware are as good as new options

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factor > build quality > performance > battery life

I’m specifically looking for a 2-in-1 or touchscreen laptop that can be used with a pen/stylus for drawing and taking notes, where the keyboard is either removable or is not facing outwards (aka down) when it’s in tablet mode.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I’d like it to be easily portable but I don’t want to sacrifice performance or durability for thinness

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13” - 15”

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I’d like something that can handle occasional very light CAD work and gaming but I don’t plan on doing anything very strenuous

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

If it can handle stardew valley I’ll be good with it.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want it to be compatible with a good pen/stylus (it doesn’t have to come with the laptop, I can buy it separately, it just needs to work well) and a decent keyboard

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I plan to use this to sketch/take notes when I’m on-the-go and I don’t want the keyboard getting messed up if I put it on a dirty surface. The best example of the form I want is the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio, which is a folio laptop so the keyboard gets covered when it’s in tablet mode, but I don’t want the specific model available currently because it hasn’t been updated in a while and I want something that has a 12th or 13th gen intel processor. I’m cool with a removable keyboard as well, as long as I’m not sacrificing too much in performance.

Hi

Looking for a 2 in 1 laptop for school

-Under $1000

-At least 7th gen i5

- 12" - 13"

- At least 8GB ram

- 128GB SSD or greater

- Last over 6hrs for battery life

- 3:2 display ratio if possible

I have a surface pro 3 which I really like but have dropped a few times due to the kickstand and the small lecture desk at school. If it were not for the kickstand I would most likely be getting another surface pro as it is generally easy to write notes and is a good size. I also do some coding for school in c++ and java.

A similar device with a hinge would be nice. Thanks for suggestions.

I can't think of a good 3:2 option. If you are open to a regular 1080p display, what about the Lenovo Yoga 720 ? 8th Gen i5-8250U 13.3" 1920 x 1080 8 GB RAM 256 GB SSD Windows 10 8 hours battery life 2.9 lbs. It has good build quality (aluminum case) that feels premium. The keyboard is also very good, especially for a thin and light ultrabook. Seems you can expect around 8 hours of battery life during general use according to this review . It is also compatible with an active stylus and it has an IPS screen for wider viewing angles. For more options you can check this list of laptops for general use . You can click on the 2-in-1 column to compare different Detachable and Convertible options. I keep this list updated, so if you are not buying right now you can check back there later on for the latest models / prices.

I would recommend this [Lenovo Yoga 730] ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CKNCQYX/?tag=bkadamos_alltest-20 ) The case is made from aluminum, feels very premium. Hinges wobble so it is hard to open with one hand and screen turns 360 degree. Very lightweight at 2.65 lbs. You can upgrade/replace the storage, but not the ram. There are two USB Type-C ports (both support TB3) and a headphone jack on the left side and a single USB 3.0 Type-A port on the right side. No HDMI ot SD card reader. Comes with Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 which is good for day to day usage. It supports digitizer pen and it has a comfortable grip and two buttons.x Comes with chiclet keyboard, key travel is quite shallow, the pressure point is not well defined, and the resistance is too small, not nearly as good as the famous Thinkpad keyboard The trackpad doesn't have dedicated mouse keys, the surface is smooth and supports Microsoft’s Precision. The touchscreen is able to detect ten fingers at the same time. It detects inputs very precisely. Screen is glossy, has good Brightness(but you still might struggle under direct sunlight), and good color coverage as well at 61.38% for RGB and 83.92% for sRGB and panel doesn't use PWM for brightness regulation. CPU throttles under long time of heavy usage, but it still more powerful than most other ultrabooks in the market. Storage is only NVMe (which makes it expensive if you want to upgrade/replace the SSD installed. Fan noise and coil whine is minimal and not noticeable. Heat management is very good, and it doesn't reach the point of being uncomfortable to hold. Speakers are not very loud and doesn't have much bass but that is to be expected from a 2 in 1. Battery life is very good at 7.5 to 9 hours with average usage

I've never had any desire to bend my laptop into different shapes. I want it just be a laptop. When I'm out in settings where a lot of people are on laptops, I barely ever see anybody bending their laptop around. It seems like 2-in-1s are for a specific niche crowd. Yet when I go online to shop for a laptop, I am aggressively bombarded with 2-in-1 laptops, as if everybody in the world is clamoring for them, and the regular ol' laptops (which the vast majority of people want) are buried under them on the page. It's just kind of bizarre to me.

Does anybody have any recommendations? Can a surface pen work with this laptop? Or would a pen like the wacom bamboo plus be better?

Top answer

Any MPP 2.0 stylus should work. With "should" being the key word. I had an HP Spectre x360 several years ago and it's response to using any compatible stylus was abysmal. My handwriting looked as if, not only did I have a stroke, but I was falling over and dying as I was writing. It's not that it is laggy. It's not that there's line wobble when you draw diagonal lines. It's that the laptop seems to only pick up where the stylus point is about once every quarter inch that you draw or write. It then extrapolates absolute nonsense in-between. (Now, hp's stylus sensing technology may have gotten better over the years. But, considering that it is HP, I seriously doubt it.) You can go into any Best Buy and get a Microsoft Slim Pen 2, which is Microsoft's best MPP 2.0 protocol stylus. Test it out with your HP laptop. If you don't get good results, then you can take back the stylus. And I would recommend that you return the laptop as well, if at all possible. If that laptop claims to be MPP 2.0 but doesn't get good results with the Slim Pen 2, then I guarantee you it is the fault of the laptop. P.S. When you buy the Slim Pen 2, don't forget to buy the charger at the same time. The Slim Pin 2 will not work until you have activated it by placing it in the charger for at least 30 seconds. Yes, the entire package is about $175, but if it allows you to draw nicely on your laptop, then it is worth it.

  • Photoshop

I won't need photoshop for huge digital painting, just sketching with a few layers when I'm on the go.

Im slightly flexible on the price if it's something that will last me long enough until the start of my professional carrer.

I've considered the HP ENVY x360 15-ew0029nb but I'm not very knowledgeable in hardware and I'm not sure how good this is. If anyone can confirm this is a good choice or suggest other options I'm all ears.

Interesting as I've just done a deep dive on very similar specifications for my son starting next term. Your budget may be a little low for current generation hardware to run Solidworks/Autocad if you want to have the GPU acceleration. You may want to consider a 12th or 11th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU (or a Ryzen 5000 series) with Nvidia GPU - something like the Asus ROG X13 ( https://rog.asus.com/uk/laptops/rog-flow/2021-rog-flow-x13-series/ ) this has all the features you need and you may be able to get it cheaper if you consider refurb/used as the online stores seem to be out of stock :(. Reviews seem to suggest that the battery life may be an issue but you put that last on your list of requirements... I'll see if I can convert my spreadsheet to a Google sheet and will post a link in an edit to this post. We had a larger budget but ended up with the Yoga 9i Gen 8 2 in 1 as the frontrunner which is only a little more than your budget although the Xe graphics will hold it back. Total budget: 1200 Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? 2-in-1>performance>Build quality>Battery life How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very, I'm used to lug around a bunch of textbooks Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Solidworks Autocad Photoshop If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't plan on gaming on that PC, but a small dedicated graphic card would be nice for 3d modelling and photoshop Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 2-in-1 Touch screen, stylus compatible with a good amount of pressure sensitivities

r/laptops on Reddit: Looking for a 2 in 1 Windows laptop with rechargable pen
May 17, 2025 -

I am pretty happy with my current laptop/tablet (HP Elite x2), but there is a small thing bothering me: the pen. It isn't really good and worst of all it needs batteries as an energy source. Currently the tablet works perfectly, but I already bought it used, so it's likely that I have to buy a new one in like the next five years (hopefully not, but it's likely, looking at the increasing poor quality of tech). Does anybody have good recommendations for a similar laptop with the same functions but a rechargeable pen? It should have at least 8GB of memory, 256GB of saving space, Windows Operation system and a keyboard that is disconnectable with the screen. And of course a rechargeable pen and touchscreen. Does anybody has experience or recommendations for a device like this?

Edit: It also should be not to expensive, around 1000€ or less (less ideally)
