I really liked this movie, more than X even. I loved how the character of Pearl was almost empathetic at first, due to the emotional abuse she suffered, but then slowly was revealed to be a monster. Aesthetically, the shot of her wearing the bright red dress while chasing her sister in law wielding the axe in broad day light I thought was one of the best scenes in a horror movie I have ever seen
It's not hard to see why Martin Scorsese, of all people, was very disturbed by this movie.
Mid March 2022, "one goddamn fucked up horror picture" named X was released, telling the tale of a porno shoot going horribly awry. All but one were brutally murdered by an old ass retiree named Pearl, played by an unrecognizable young British lady married to a cannibal.
In her X-traoridinary Origin Story, we go 60 years back. It's 1918. World War I is nearing its end (Pearl's husband Howard is fighting in the war) and the Spanish Flu is around. Young farmer girl Pearl is closed off from the world at her German parents' farm... in Texas. Pearl is dreaming of being a dancer (a chorus girl), even spending time at the movies watching her dreams on the screen, something her mother doesn't approve of. A run-in with the projectionist, her sister-in-law telling her that they're holding chorus girl auditions soon, and her mother's constant torment soon result in Pearl slowly becoming deranged.
Contrasting the dark and gloomy X, Pearl is pretty, colorfull and bright. Also has Star Wars style wipe transitions. And all of this is anchored by co-writer and producer Mia Goth's unbelievable performance. Again, Scorsese being blown away isn't shocking by the time you reach the 90 minute mark, with 12 left. Her emotions are so insanely well portrayed they actually feel real. Mia Goth deserves any award she's nominated to for her performance.
The series of events that unfold throughout the movie, with Pearl's slow descent into madness, culminates in an ending you probably know about even if you haven't watched the movie. It's impressive and disturbing, yes, but what makes it impressive and disturbing is what leads up to it.
Hats off to Ti West and Mia Goth, because THAT is some fucking acting.
