What are your thoughts on The federal government (Bureau of Labor Statistics) announcing today that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created through March 2024 than previously reported and that It’s the largest downward revision in 15 years?
What are your thoughts on The federal government (Bureau of Labor Statistics) announcing today that there were 818,000 fewer jobs created through March 2024 than previously reported and that It’s the largest downward revision in 15 years? Revisions happen all the time. There are efforts in right-wing media to claim it shows some sort of dishonesty, or that revisions are all in one direction (they aren't). If this was exceptional, then I would encourage their management to review their methodology...but I won't assume that something was wrong with it. Such people tend to be dedicated to the goal of producing accurate statistics; their job is to be the speedometer, not to work the gas pedal. ...and that is an excellent reason to vote for Democrats. Democrats believe that these people should remain apolitical technocrats. Trump calls them 'the Deep State' and wants to be able to fire them for being 'disloyal' (aka publishing unflattering numbers). Lastly, we are below the natural rate of unemployment. The way it is expected to work is that -- when there are no shocks -- we constantly drift towards the natural rate of unemployment. That means we should expect unemployment to rise. It is kind of remarkable that it has stayed this low for this long. More on reddit.com

Has unemployment really increased in the US or is the Fed scamming us again?
Job postings are in sharp decline right now too. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/JTSJOL To be counted as unemployed, you generally need to be seeking work. The definition is here. https://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm#unemployed Wouldn't it be more logical for the government to lie about having better numbers than reality? The economy partially functions on faith that things are going well so that everyone keeps spending and people who are seeking reelection don't want the economy to look bad. More on reddit.com
