r/Askpolitics on Reddit: What are the odds of Democrats retaking the House and Senate in 2026?
July 6, 2025 -
With Republicans currently in control of both chambers, I’m wondering what people think the realistic chances are that Democrats can flip either the House or the Senate or both in the 2026 midterms. What trends, issues, or key races could help them pull it off? Are there early signs from polling, turnout, or fundraising that suggest momentum one way or the other?
Curious to hear thoughts from people who follow this stuff closely.

If you watched the DNC's Winter meeting - it's almost as if they learned nothing. I wouldn't have high hopes.

Depends. I think it will be dependent on two things. Inflation: how well does Powell tamper inflation? How do tariffs impact his ability to do so? (If people think the economy sucks then they won’t vote for Trump policies and republicans have gone all in) Democrats: Do they pick a leader? Kamala was the sacrificial lamb. They picked the worst polling democrat of the presidential primary in 2020 to be the VP and then tried to make her moderate when the party is pulling more left. They’ll need a face that they can rally to. (They’ll need a Buttigieg type. Young, well spoken, and can get the job done). Think about how close in terms of some of the states were even with VP Harris who only ran an 150 day campaign or whatever it was. President Trump had a huge lead, got shot, and was running against a party that had been in power during rampant inflation and still almost lost a few key battleground states (yes almost doesn’t count) but Harris wasn’t exactly a punch your ticket type candidate.
