In a 4-bit world the two's complement of 5 is 11 and the two's complement of 11 is 5.
What is the two's complement?
The two's complement is a way to represent negative numbers in binary when the minus sign is not available. The minus sign is substituted in the two's complement representation by a digit, usually the leading one.
- If the leading digit is
0, the number is positive. - If the leading digit is
1, the number is negative.

How do I calculate the two's complement of a number?
To calculate the two's complement of a number:
- If the number is negative, subtract it from the power of 2 with exponent corresponding to the number of bits of your chosen representation.
- Convert the number to binary.
- If the number was negative, add
1to the proper position and pad with0. - If the number was positive, left-pad the result with
0to the desired length.

What is the 8-bit two's complement notation of -37?
The 8-bit two's complement representation of −37 is 110110112. To find this result:
- Subtract 37 from 27: 128 − 37 =91.
- Find the binary representation of 91:
91 = 64 + 16 + 8 + 2 + 1
= 1·26 + 0·25 + 1·24 + 1·23 + 0·22 + 1·21 + 1·20
=1011011 - Place 1 in the correct position to mark that we started from a negative number:
−3710 = 110110112

Two's Complement
What can we say about this number? It's first (leftmost) bit is 1, which means that this represents a number that is negative. That's just the way that things are in two's complement: a leading 1 means the number is negative, a leading 0 means the number is 0 or positive.

Two's Complement Number - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Two's complement number is a binary representation for signed integers in which the most significant bit (MSB) position has a weight of −2^(N−1) instead of 2^(N−1), allowing both positive and negative values to be encoded within the same binary format.

I am following a tutorial that states to get the binary reprsentation of a negative value, you invert the bits.
So 20 in binary is
0001 0100
Then -20 is
1110 1011
But dont understand why this isnt 235, and how do you represent 235, if the above is -20?

to get the binary reprsentation of a negative value, you invert the bits. This is incorrect. You have to invert the bits and add 1. So the binary for -20 is 1110 1100. Just inverting bits is a different system called 1's complement, it's never really used in practice. It has the quirk that 0 and -0 have different representations.

An "unsigned" 8-bit integer can represent values ranging from 0 to 255. A "signed" integer, using two's complement representation, can represent values ranging from -128 to 127. An unsigned integer can't represent -20, and a signed integer can't represent 235 (unless you have more than 8 bits). The same bit pattern 11101011 could represent either -20 or 235, depending on whether you choose to interpret it as signed or unsigned. You can choose whichever representation you like as long as you do so consistently.

The Two's Complement
Consider the problem of representing both positive AND negative integers over a given range in terms of only ones and zeroes. A straight-forward approach would be to deal with the sign and the magnitude (or, the absolute value) separately. For example, suppose we have 8 bits with which to work.

To understand this better, let's discuss how this calculator works. For a given binary number, the two's complement is found by inverting all the bits (turning 1s to 0s and vice versa) in the binary representation and then adding 1 to the least significant bit.
