Should we have our contractor install a 2x2 tile shower floor or a regular shower base?

Shower pans are not that difficult to build. But unfortunately they are the place where someone without experience can really screw things up. I like the schluter system. It's costly but it simplifies the process. Less things for the uninitiated to screw up. IMO it's really a personal choice on fibreglass vs tile. A good contractor should be able to handle both. My preference is a custom pan and tile. I like the look. More on reddit.com

Best tiles for shower floor?

As shitty as I think fiberglass bases are, they are by far the easiest thing to keep clean. My preference goes to 2x2 squares when it comes to shower floor tile - although I suppose that comes from the perspective of them being one of the easiest small tiles to lay. Larger format should be easier to keep clean, but the multitude of grout lines on these smaller tiles give them a bit more grip. More on reddit.com

grout can crack for a variety of issues from being too wet a mix, to improper grout (unsanded) in too wide of joints (over 1/8") to differential movement in the tile/sub base itself
