I would absolutely not get the Alec Steele grinder. Way over priced. If you are new to making and donโ€™t know how to weld I wouldnโ€™t dive into any weld it yourself projects. There is a lot to welding and grinders need to be precise. Iโ€™d say stick with a 2x72, you wonโ€™t be upset you have a better running machine. Brodbeck or ameribrade is really the only two options you need to consider. I like ameribrade but either one wonโ€™t be a miss. More on reddit.com

2x72 belt grinder for blade thinning and repair

Does it have a variable speed?

Do you have any polishing wheels?

Do you have any cooling sytem (bucket with cold water is enough)?

Is there any other sharpening tool around ? because repair small chips with a beltgrinder seems pretty extreme.

Do we talk about secondary bevels ? It is the perfect tool for thinning and forming/reforming primary bevels on a knive, infact you can make t knive now ! But if you want to have secondary bevels i woud do that in a second step on a stone or other tool. You can do that on a beltgrinder also ofc but the chance that you mess up with a scondarybevel at the beginning is high haha

Do you have any tool to reharden steel if you produce too much heat on the blade?

January 26, 2023 -

I'm a relatively new hobbyist maker looking to upgrade from my current 1x30. I've narrowed my search down to either the Alec Steele 2x48 (made by 84 Engineering) or the DIY Revolution Gen 5 (which would also be my first welding project).

In doing my research, I've found that one of the largest reasons for recommending a 2x72 over a 2x48 is a greater availability of belts. With a bit of googling, I've found plenty of belts available in both sizes, so that's not really a concern of mine. It also looks like the 2x48 can most of the same accessories a 2x72 can.

The differences I'm really interested in are:

  1. Footprint- is a 2x48 really that much of a space savings over a 2x72?

  2. Belt life- I know a 2x72 will last longer, but how much are we talking here?

  3. Heat build up- again, obviously a 2x72 will out perform a 2x48 here, but by how much?

Basically just trying to get a better idea of the differences in these areas so I can make a better informed decision on which grinder is right for me.

A few other considerations that are more specific to my situation and less about the overall differences between the two sizes:
4) platen size. The 2x48 comes with a 6" platen- I couldn't immediately find the size of the Revolution platen, but it looks to be 8"-ish in the pictures. How much will that limit a novice maker, and would a 48" belt fit a larger platen at some point down the line? I'm most interested in making kitchen knives, so I'll be working in the 8"-10" range for blades.
5) I've never welded before. I have access to a welder and don't mind spending a little time learning the basics with scrap, but welding a whole grinder chasis together looks a little intimidating.

If you've made it this far- thanks for taking the time to read through- any guidance or experience shared is much appreciated.

An 84 engineering 2x48 is the best choice for a 48 inch grinder on the market no two ways about it. Making grinders is easy but making good grinders is not. There are a lot of grinders out there that people will foam at the mouth defending because that's what they have and have not compared it to anything else except what they had before. Everyone is biased to their own choice. I am the machinist at 84 engineering so I am biased toward the grinders I make. Even so I think you'd genuinely be hard pressed to find a better quality grinder at that price. You can buy a similar quality 72 from someone like brodbeck or one of ours but it will be more expensive, or for the same price you could buy a lower quality. Personally I'd take a premium quality 48 over a budget 72. The belts last 2/3 as long but they can be changed in seconds. Individual belts are cheaper but they cost more per foot. I'm putting a 48 in my workshop based on the fact it's smaller and takes up significantly less space while taking all the same accessories as the 72. If I thought I'd be handicapped in any way by using a 48 then I would have gone with the 72 and it would have cost the same either way.

My 2x48" Belt Grinder - its a beast! โ€” The Practical Engineer
January 26, 2020 - I wanted a belt grinder that is STRONG, I donโ€™t want to hassle with something underpowered when grinding metal. Doing my research I found that itโ€™s recommended to have 1 HP for every inch of belt width. That meant for the two-inch belt I needed a 1.5kW motor since the price difference was only a little bit I decided not to fuzz around and I got the 2.2kW motor at 3000RPM.
