I recently got a Serta 10" queen size mattress with 8" of really firm foam and 2" of gel foam and think I'm going to need a topper. I'm 6'2, 200 lbs and I guess I'm looking for a medium or soft topper. Amazon reviews on budget toppers always seems to show that the toppers around or under $120 only last a few months before bottoming out. I did see people saying to rotate the topper monthly so I guess that would help. I just spent $400 on the mattress so I'm thinking budget, but I could go over $150. I was eyeing a few toppers during the labor day sales, but didn't get one. I'm fine with whatever foam will be soft and reasonably durable. Any suggestions?

If you want a memory foam topper that doesn't break down quickly -- look for higher density memory foams. Ideally 4.0lbs pcf or higher. 5.0lbs is great. I think Plushbeds actually sells a 5.3lb topper which might be the highest. I would avoid any memory foam topper that doesn't list or disclose a density as that probably means it's a low quality foam. Latex foam toppers and serene foam toppers will also tend to be higher quality as well.

Are you looking for latex or memory foam? I'm 200 lbs and I used a pretty cheap 3" memory foam topper from Walmart for a couple of years with no complaints. I just stopped using it because my husband wanted to get a new mattress.

2 inch mattress topper vs 3 inch - big difference?

Having given up on mattress shopping (for now), I decided to buy a 3" topper to improve the plushtop hybrid mattress that after 7 years never gave me the softness I wanted. Since I badly wanted softness with a pronounced body contour, I went with a Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Topper. For me, it's an instant hit. It gave my mattress new life, with a feel exactly like the pricy LuxeAdapt Soft I loved in the TP showroom. A lightweight back sleeper, luckily I don't sleep hot. To me, the 3" thickness was enough to give me the hug I wanted. Plus, I bought the topper for 40% off! But for the OP, this TP topper might be too soft. Will getting a 3 inch mattress topper completely change the feel of my medium latex mattress?

Latex is a very active comfort layer with a lot of pushback, a memory foam topper would be successful in mitigating issues along your pressure points and giving your surface better contouring. It will help give you passive relief you're not currently benefitting from. A softer talalay is also a solid option (avoid Dunlop in most cases when you want soft) but will cost more. If you are more of a side sleeper I'd reccomend at least a 3" topper and not all toppers are super expensive - depending on the size of your mattress you should be able to get a good foam one for around $150.
