If you get pulled the bill of sale will probably satisfy the cop. If you get a ticket you can probably resolve it by showing the clerk of court that you did get a plate. Mostly the state wants to make sure they get paid. Answer from bobroberts1954 on reddit.com

Correct way to drive unregistered car back to Arizona?
https://servicearizona.com/applicationFAQ/3day A Restricted Use 3-Day Permit allows a person to operate an unregistered vehicle or a vehicle with a suspended registration from the present location of the vehicle to a specified destination. The Restricted Use 3-Day Permit is valid only for the following purposes only: Emissions Testing Vehicle Inspection Application for Title and/or Registration Vehicle repair to comply with Emissions or Inspection Might be a loose interpretation of the rules, but seems to me you are moving the vehicle (from another state) to 'Apply for Title and/or Registration'. E: This may also be a potential option . More on reddit.com

r/southcarolina on Reddit: How to get temporary car tag?
December 3, 2024 -

I'm driving Greenville to Columbia to buy used car from a relative. How do I get the temporary tag to be able to drive it back to Greenville? Online search says to bring bill of sale to DMV to get a temp tag, but I can't do that until I buy it? Or can I drive it from Columbia to Greenville with just the bill of sale and get the temp tag on Monday?

Thanks!

https://www.scdmvonline.com/Vehicle-Owners/Buying-Or-Selling-A-Car If the car has a tag, have the seller remove it and keep it. Make sure you have the title properly transferred the day of the sale and in the car while driving. Fill out the back with all the info correctly. Keep this in the car until it is registered. You should get a bill of sale from the seller even if it is just handwritten and signed by them and you. Keep this in the car, too. (Wording can be simple: I, SELLER NAME, sold a 1967 Ford Mustang convertible, to YOUR NAME, for $3,000 on Dec. 4, 2025. As-is. No warranty. Seller signature. Buyer signature. ) If you already have car insurance, it will cover you until you get this car on your policy. Keep an insurance card in this car, too. This covers you for driving around. You won’t get a paper tag. When you go to the DMV to get it titled in your name and a plate, be sure you have proof of paying county taxes and insurance. To pay county taxes find the tax office in your county and bring the title with you. Do all of this quickly to avoid any issues with being late. The DMV will keep the old title and give you a registration card with your plate. Keep that in your car. They will mail the new title to you. File that safely.
