December 28, 2020We’re renovating our kitchen and stuck on size of island. Options are 72” (2 X 18” cabinets and a 36” on side and 2 X 36 on the other side) or 90” (36”, 18”, and 36” on both sides)
I wouldn't go with the bigger island because I would want to have a more accessible space. It would also make the room look smaller, unless the look doesn't matter. Functionality is best when accessability isn't an issue. The room should have a good flow with function. It's really mostly preference. Will there be a lot of foot traffic during the day? Do you need more counter space/surface space? What is your main intention for the kitchen? These are just some questions to think about when designing the space. Hope this helps! More on reddit.com

Yeah I wouldn’t bother with the breakfast bar, unless you think you would actually use that. It seems quite well laid out given the constraints. The only thing is to me your island isn’t very ergonomic and the entry door location and the sink at the window are the constraints. The space closest to the entry door on the island and counter is less useable. Would you rather a U? More on reddit.com

I’m looking to build a simple kitchen island using materials from IKEA.
Here’s what I‘m thinking so far-

We are contemplating doing something similar... have mocked it up in their kitchen planner; used 2- small 9” wide 30” tall wine rack cupboards-one on each end- backed to the other cupboards, to support the extra wide counter and create a small eat at space on the backside of the island. I figured the panel/cover that you can buy to on the ends of a cupboard run could also go in the back side that would be exposed on the island.. that makes sense?
