That certainly works but it isn't quite the technique that I saw. There is a way in Photoshop to select both layers and created a stepped effect without using the ctrl alt keys. Basically doing what the ctrl alt keys do but automatically and you are able to specify number of steps from one bit of text to the duplicate

3D type features seem to be effortless in vector graphics apps like Illustrator according to the many posts that I've read here. If you don't have Illustrator, you might try Inkscape, a free alternative. Then bring your type layers into Ps. Or as u/MicahBurke suggested, check out Blender. I've often seen that recommended for 3D type at this sub.

If you need the 3D features, I would recommend installing the last version with these features (I think it was version 22). This is what I'm currently doing.

Actions to generate mockups with the 3D layer system
this is a little tricky because it sounds like you're doing something where one file = multiple images. What kind of file is that? A layered PSD? A multi-page PDF? This is what I would want as my setup: Open any sample image. Record an action of just the mockup steps. Don't include opening any files in the action, and don't include saving or closing in the action. Put every image in one folder, and back the folder up. If necessary, convert their format (like if they're jpegs and you're going to need transparency later, convert them first to png or PSD's). If you have multiple images in one file, like a multipage PDF, maybe export them as separate image files? File - automate - batch - choose the folder. It will do everything in the folder and stop when there's nothing left in the folder to do. Choose "Save and close" as the destination (which is why we made the backup first). If all of the above can't work because you have a file with multiple images, you can still probably do this with photoshop scripting. Scripting can choose specific layers and even detect layers of a certain type (like text) before running actions on those layers. More on reddit.com
Text Effects disappear in 3D Mode
3D uses the outline of the object - layer styles will not be converted into 3D. You can convert to smart object, or flatten the layer and styles and make the layer 3D but you might not achieve the look you're after. More on reddit.com
How do you turn a 3D layer back into a 2D layer?
Simply right-click and rasterize the layer.
But most of the time you don't need to do this; painting should be done one a new layer anyway. Adjusting colors are done with Adjustment layers. Hiding parts of the layer is done with masks. If you need to transform it you could simply convert it to a Smart object first.
So there are rarely reasons to rasterize.
Ps: If you rasterize, you might want to take a copy of it first just in case you want to make changes later.
