I have the non-wheeled and use mine as a carry-on just about every flight. And for when my bag is heavy, I purchased a Samsonite folding luggage cart which converts the bag into a wheeled duffel and then can fold neatly under the bag in overhead storage. I don’t know who in that company thinks that removing the backpack straps and adding wheel features (net neutral outcome) justifies a $200 price increase…save the $200 and have the option to backpack your duffel or convert it. If you’re going to use it exclusively as a carry on I would go wheeled. But, given how expensive it is I would go with a different wheeled carry on that’s better for plane travel and navigating airports. If I’m doing a 2 wheeled carry on suitcase, I’m going for a Travelpro Rollaboard Maxlite. If you’re going use it for things other than plane travel as well I’d get the regular duffel. The thing is, duffels are bad plane travel bags. They really excel at short hops, like your house to car, car to hotel, etc. For lugging around an airport, it gets tiresome very quickly to carry a duffel, especially if you’re also bringing a personal item. There are better options from Patagonia, like the Black Hole MLC, or much better options from other brands like Tom Bihn, for duffel style travel bags that are made to be carried in a variety of ways. I would never want to carry my main travel bag in any way other than backpack mode, or rolling next to me. You want the weight distributed evenly on your back, or off of your body completely. This allows you to not only be comfortable, but carry your personal item easily as well. My work trip 3 day traveling setup is a Tom Bihn Aeronaut paired with a Tom Bihn Co-Pilot. My Patagonia black hole duffels are reserved for car trips.

My main travel bag is the 40L Topo Designs Mountain Duffle. I’ve carried it on tons of flights both international and domestic. I like the simplicity and padded structure.
Previously, I did one trip with their Global Travel Bag and hated all the stupid pockets and extra material, it felt like it had tons of compartments but no space. I guess I just like a big open bag. I don’t even really utilize the external side pockets on the Mountain Duffle, though I like the internal mesh pocket for this and that.
Been hitting a wall though with 40L on trips of around two weeks, particularly if I need to bring clothes for multiple activities/climates or need a second pair of shoes, like dress shoes or hiking boots. The bag is stuffed!
I have a three week trip coming up and want something slightly bigger, but not so big that it precludes carry on.
Here’s what I’m looking at and what I like about them:
Patagonia Black Hole 55L - It is what it is, seems like the perfect size but isn’t particularly exciting.
Black Diamond Stonehauler 60L - Looks nice and I like the integrated bag for dirty laundry/shoes.
The North Face Base Camp Voyager 62L - I like the external pocket for shoes/laundry, but feels flimsy and the backpack straps in the lid seem weird. Worried it would be too big, but I bought one to check it out and it’s not substantially bigger than my 40L Mountain Duffle. See pics.

Your about at the max safe carry-on alteady. Anything over 22" is technically too large. Sometimes you'll be ok, sometimes it'll end up checked at cost at the gate. My wife packed a 45L duffel that was listed at 22" on the website. It was absolutely stuffed. We got through the gate, but it was a smaller regional jet (still listed 22" max) and the flight was packed. The overheads were completely stuffed throughout the plane and it took both of us to stuff it into the only spot left and get the door shut. This was the first time she tried one bagging and she gets embarrassed easily. She used that bag a few more times, but I swear she left it 1/4 empty after that. Anecdotal, but anything over 22" is definitely risky. I've seen people board with much larger bags, but I've seen people get force checked as well. Can you add a personal item backpack instead? You can get another 20-25L that way.

I’m looking for a backpack that has wheels that I can use as personal item to fly internationally. So it must have backpack straps and wheels would be super helpful.
My previous setup was away bigger carryon and crumpler road mentor backpack that’s 24L expandable to 30L, I know no one bag setup but please don’t judge me. This time I’m looking to bring more items and I’m looking into bigger backpack, considering Patagonia Black Hole Wheeled Duffel Bag 40L as replacement of my current backpack but unsure if that’s a good idea alongside with my carryon. I would put the backpack on my back when boarding the plane. Is there any other roller backpack options?
I hate carrying heavy backpack and want setup that I can bring onboard to international flight. At the same time I’m not sure if it’s convenient to have two roller bags to go around the airport.
Did anyone tried similar setup?

40L and personal item are not compatible. That's a full size carry on bag. I have a wheeled backpack. Why exactly do you want one? It's not a good backpack or a good roller bag, I was gifted it for a specific situation where I had to turn a roller bag into a backpack on the same trip without any chance to repack or re organize, and the advantages of the flexibility outweighed the very real and annoying disadvantages of the combo. I genuinely recommend against them unless you already know you're in a situation where one would be very helpful. Also that bag isn't a rolling backpack, it's just a rolling duffle bag.

Backpack wheel combos are miserable things. An under seat sized bag is going to be severely limited by all the hardware and heavy for the capacity. As others mentioned, 40 liters is out of the question. Two roller bags is madness. An overhead sized roller and a small under seat bag with a handle sleeve would be a workable combo. The Osprey Daylite Tote Pack is a good personal item. I loathe roller bags, but if you can’t physically handle an overhead sized backpack, that’s the deal. Two wheel bags a more rugged and better for rough pavement, tall curbs and the like. Spinner bags are for hotel/taxi/airport loops. My usual kit is a 32 liter backpack and 8 liter personal item. I can take that anywhere on the planet.
