Totally normal. The mesh can only be so small, so some small sparks are still going to get through. But the small sparks that get through will usually burn themselves out before they reach the ground or other surrounding objects. More on reddit.com

So I'm making a DIY Firepit as a gift and local by-laws require I have a Fire Screen.. (Such As). However, all the ones I've seen in store are crazy expensive. I figured I could make one but I'm running out of time and options, so far we've considered:
Cover the entire pit with metal and then cut slits or drill holes in the top. I hate this option because you would lose the actual view of the fire. Not to mention the amount of holes/slits we'd need to make. Also weakening the metal left in between the cuts.
Make a frame and weld a wire mesh onto it. Simple right? Not. I haven't been able to find a decent mesh in stores, online neither or shipping is way too long. I wanted to use at least 16 gauge wire but the mesh openings need to be quite small to actually work as a fire screen..
Which brings me to my latest idea. Grab some 16 gauge wire and weld the mesh manually however I like. Now.. This means lots of welds, lots of wire. Would it hold up with constant heat from the fire?
Any ideas? Opinions? Screen needs to be ~28" x 36". Have access to home welding machine and pro welder.

I am doing exact same project for a circular cover that has a diameter of 40 inches. The frame was put together with 1/8 mild steel but adding the mesh has been a frustrating pain. The mig on lowest settings will still burn through the mesh. Saw a technique on yputube about welding near the mesh and while the weld puddle is still hot, push ot over onto the mesh. This didn't work out for me as i still ended up with burn out or a glob of weld that didn't get moved over quick enough. Had some issues with trying to go the epoxy route which failed as well. Even tried to braze but so far that hasn't been a great result either. So back to drawing board. I can't seem to find a thicker mesh to use that would hold up to heat but still be fine enough to actually prevent sparks escaping. Could layer multiple thicker mesh and add several layers to close up gaps but by then it may be too heavy for wife to lift easily.
