Telling the time in Italian
"L'una meno un quarto" is what I'd normally say. "Le dodici e quarantacinque" maybe if the emphasis was on the time itself. Like you are setting up a clock/alarm/whatever and asking for precise time. "Le dodici e tre quarti" sounds quite stiff and unusual, I'd never say it and it's not something I hear either. More on reddit.com

Use HelloTalk to find a language partner who's interested in learning your native language. Amazing app, great features that make the whole experience so much easier. Make sure you find someone who's as committed as you are, I'd say that's the most important part. Also, if you own a kindle reader (ebook), read a lot on that: it should have a built-in pop-up dictionary that allows you to tap on a word and get the translation. I use it all the time with Arabic and it was a game changer. More on reddit.com

Italian Numbers For Beginners: How to Count & More
January 21, 2025 - Similar in Italian, because while in the numbers that start with 1, you adapt the form of dieci, ten, in some way, i.e. undici or diciassette. From the twenties it’s just the number next to another number, such as ventitré for 23 and quarantacinque for 45 — with one exception: when the second number starts with “o” or “u,” you contract: venti+otto becomes ventotto, trenta+uno: trentuno.

If I want to say ‘It’s 12:45’, for example, does it matter if I say:
Sono le dodici e quarantacinque
Sono e dodici e tre quarti
È l’una meno un quarto
Would you use them in any particular situation (of formality for example) or is it just personal preference/whatever’s quickest?

March 22, 2023 - When constructing bigger numbers, Italian and English have some differences. For instance, there is no Italian equivalent of the English way of saying “eleven hundred” or “fifteen hundred”. Italians would instead say one thousand one hundred, “millecento” (1100) or one thousand five hundred, “millecinquecento” (1500).
