I am remodeling my bathroom and have a few different options for the layout. The biggest difference between the two frontrunners is the size of the shower. Which would you prefer - a 4'x4' shower or a 6'x3.5' shower?

So I had the same choice when we remodeled. Probably very different contexts but maybe it will help you. We ended up choosing the 6’x3.5’ shower. the longer stall allowed us to incorporate a steam generator into the ceiling and for the occupant to lie down on a bench. Of course adding the steam generator and designing the enclosure to be steam-friendly increased our costs. I admit however we don’t use that steam feature much (20x/year). Most of the time, the shower has felt very large because the 6’ direction allows for quite the empty space that needs to heat up. I find it mildly chilly especially in the winter months. If I had to do it again I would choose the 4x4 and enjoy the steam with a reclining seat.

We bought a house built in 1968. It is 1.5 bathrooms.

We are hoping to reconfigure the master, which is a half bathroom to include at least a stand up shower. But not sure if this is possible with its size.

Hey everyone,

Redoing a bathroom and wondering if anyone has opinions.

Pros for the 4x4: -slightly bigger -more elbow room for rotating -showerhead centered so there might not be a "cold spot" -same perimeter as 3x5 so slightly more efficient from a material point of view

Cons for the 4x4: -not as easy to add a bench -not much choice over door placement -potentially less likely to do a linear drain, takes away some design decisions -cant be oriented along the length of a narrow room

In our case either will fit fine but it'll have a big influence on the rest of the layout. For example if we go 4x4 then we'll put a toilet beside it, but if we go 3x5 we'll put a linens closet

I went with a 4x4 shower and am still thrilled ( wanted the extra room in shower and on side as I added a toilet as well) One downside is that finding shower pan and doors that would fit correctly was a bit of a trial. However, having put it to use over the last 4 months, it feels luxurious. I got a corner bench/stool for shower. Just enough to sit and does not interfere with space

My shower is 3.5 x 3.5 feet. That's a good width. I hate the length though. I'd prefer the 5 ft long option. My 2 cents is avoid the shower benches. They are rarely in a good spot for people who actually need to sit so if you ever get injured and are non weight bearing you'll be trying to still get a proper shower chair in there and the built in bench will be in the way. Also it's just one more surface to clean. If its just appealing to make shaving easier you can have them build in a little corner shelf or ledge for this purpose.
