September 5, 2023 - For example, the statistic does not tell us anything about the nutritional content of the food or about how well/interestingly it is cooked. This would be relevant evidence for knowing if the food is indeed good food. Bandwagon Fallacy: Definition and Examples | Grammarly
September 7, 2022 - Another name for the bandwagon fallacy is appeal to the masses. You might notice the similarity between this and a few other fallacies, like appeal to emotion and appeal to authority. With all of these types of argument, the arguer attempts to get the other party to agree with their position through a strategy other than communicating the position logically. For example, the appeal to authority fallacy claims something is true because an authoritative source supports it, even though that authoritative source is either not qualified to make statements about the subject or that source’s expertise is overstated.

[meta] evidence of the bandwagon effect (and an algorithm to fix it)

What listing would they see it on? Recently, there was a test of putting low-score posts in people's hot feed and there was nonstop complaining. If you put it in new, then nobody but the same tiny crew is going to see it.

It's already halfway in effect anyway. Votes have logarithmic worth for hotness. https://github.com/reddit/reddit/blob/master/r2/r2/lib/db/_sorts.pyx#L47

Secondly, you don't need permission to post here. It's all meta.

Probably the clearest example of the bandwagon effect I have ever seen on Reddit.

I love these threads!

I'm so curious how they work though, I mean, it must take some serious organizing/bot writing/whateverhoweverthathappens to turn an entire thread into a karma graveyard.

It's just so mysteriously awesome.

How does the bandwagon fallacy work?
The bandwagon fallacy works by arguing that because so many other people hold a specific belief, that belief can’t be wrong. It makes the listener or reader second-guess any doubts they have about that belief and potentially wonder if they’re the one with the misinformed opinion.

March 26, 2025 - When your opinion on something is asked, you may not want to be the first to answer, but once a number of people have taken the lead, you too jump on the bandwagon. Consider discussions in Facebook groups (Wang et al., 2015). Your son doubts which high school he will attend, but ultimately chooses the one his friends also attend. When companies see competitors achieving success with agile working, for example, they implement it in hopes of similar success, even if they don't fully understand how it works or whether it's right for their business.
