Claude code used to show the time that it'd reset. It was quite helpful to be able to plan for getting lunch, coffee, workout, etc.

I assume they're prepping for the Aug 28 hammer.. but removing transparency is a bit frustrating.

Note before your pants-ants go nuts, settle down I'm using roughly 70% sonnet.

After hitting the limit, it does show the time: Knowing the time beforehand was nice to plan that for instance, in about 20 minutes (when I hit the limit), I'll have a break until X.

I resumed my Claude Code session at midnight, accidentally closed my VS Code instance, reopened it and started a new Claude Code session. At 3am 23Aug2025, I was notified with "5-hour limit reached ∙ resets 5am".

I didn’t understand something — I thought the limit reset every 5 hours! I didn’t realize there was a one-hour break between two 5-hour sessions...

You are misunderstanding the limits… Your five hour window starts from when you begin using it during a fresh window. i.e. if you start at 10am, it will finish at 2pm regardless if you reached your usage limit. Then at 2pm, the usage limit restarts a new 5 hour window (the moment you begin using it after 2pm) What seems to have happened in your case is you reached your usage limit before the 5 hour window was up…so it’s not a “one hour break”. It’s likely you used your limit up at the 4th hour of your cycle…hence having to wait an hour before using again.

they changed something today, I hit my limit on low usage in 2 hours, usually I will be going max speed , multiple projects and only max out near the 5 hour limit ($200 plan). Seems very restrictive today, and I am not doing much.... this is sad.

I just switch from Cursor to Claude Code. I've understood that once u start any session with claude code, an open window of 5 hours just started, with some limit.

Im thinking about the idea to abuse it:

If I have 6 hours to work, say 4PM till 10PM
its best for me to "enjoy" 3 hours from one "five-hours-session" and another 3 hours from second "five-hours-session"
meaning, I should start claude code session in 2PM, so that when I start coding in 4PM, at 7PM, my window will reset.

Am I missing something?

Works for me, I've gotten out of bed at 3am to type "/next" which works on the next task master item, another solid hour from 7-8am, then the next session runs from 8am to 1pm.

Hey everyone,

Not sure what’s going on, but starting today, I’m suddenly hitting my usage limits after only a few non coding related prompts (like 3–4). This has never happened before.

I didn’t change my plan, my workflow, or the size of my prompts. I’m using Claude Code normally, and out of nowhere it tells me I’m at my limit and blocks further use.

A couple things I’m trying to figure out:

Is this happening to anyone else today specifically?
Did Anthropic quietly change the quota calculations?
Could it be a bug or rate-limit miscount?
Is there any workaround people found? Logging out, switching networks, switching country, etc.?

It’s super frustrating because I literally can’t work with only a few prompts before getting locked out.

If anyone has info or experienced the same thing today, please let me know.

Same here. It's not a small decrease. It's severely reduced. I already cancelled my subscription. It began last night for me, like night and day.

Came to post this, I've never burned capacity at anywhere near this rate as a 20x max user. Any chance that we get an official response to this?

I am a Pro user and often hit the timeout limit. As I understood it, Claude gives you a token limit that resets five hours after the session starts. Therefor I try to ask Claude a question immediately after waking up, thinking it will trigger the start of session and also the five hour reset timer. Then I can go about my morning routine a little bit more chill, bother Claude a little later, thinking it will clear the limit earlier than if I didnt send that question. So today I ask Claude a Question around 0800 in the morning, at about 1215 Claude tells me it will reset at 1600, although it should reset at 1300 if the session started at 0800.

So what is the issue here? Did I not trigger the 5h window with the initial question? Is the cooldown timer now dynamic?

The limit is meant to annoy you until you upgrade. The difference between Pro and Max is $80 a month or $960 a year. It's greed. This 5 hour limit is new. I've been using Claude for over a year. Once they created the "max" plan, they started fucking with the pro users. I didn't want to upgrade so i simply got a second $20 plan because $40 a month is cheaper than $100 a month. But they want to fuck with people like me as well.

I'm guessing you'll need to hold off for 24 hours or more to reset the rolling window alignment, if that's what you want. As an aside, are you keeping session size in mind? The more context that has to be sent with your prompt, the more tokens you'll be consuming as the model has to read through all of the session's context with every prompt. If you have a huge session, get rate limited, then continue in -that- session, you'll hit the rate limit even more quickly. Personally I try to wrap sessions up when they get overly large. Even though it's annoying to have to 'recap' in a new session to get Claude back up to speed with what you were talking about, since there's currently no "please go read and summarize our previous session" functionality.
