5-card draw is a simple form of poker, where each player is dealt five cards, and they have the opportunity to exchange some or all of their cards for new ones in an attempt to improve their hand. I’m working on a project where I’m creating a poker app that can give a player odds of achieving the best of the 10 possible 5 card hands (in 5-card texas hold em).
This means that I give a percentage for each of the possible 5 card hands being the BEST possible after the complete run-out of the board. So for example, if you have a pocket pair the “high card” category will be given 0% probability. And of course all the probabilities should add to 100%.
My algorithm can find the odds for a board with 3,4, or 5 cards, but takes a day and a half to simulate every possibility of an empty board. So I decided to try to find a general way to find every combination of hands that result from the given 2 cards at the start and divide by the total possible.
Rephrased: The board has C(50,5)*5! combinations, and I looked to associate each of them in a general way to the 10 categories of possible 5 card hands.
Ive started by focusing on only non-pocket unsuited hands. The pictures are examples of some of the work i’ve done, straight flush is definitely wrong in this section and I made changes to it that I haven’t clearly written yet.
I try to find a general intuitive way that each 5 card hand would be created and then address double counting for previously constructed cases.
Am i going about this the right way? it’s been extremely tedious but I see online calculators that have this information, should I just be calculating this beforehand for each 2 card hand and making a 25k element array? Would greatly appreciate any advice I’ve spent a couple days on this.
