January 19, 2024Kingston Fury 64GB DDR4 3200 CL20 RAM working in XPS 9710! (with SPD mod)
I managed to get the Kingston Fury DDR4 3200 CL20 RAM working in my new XPS 9710!
It appears that the XMP profile, which is stored in the SPD EEPROM at bytes 0x161-0x1ff on the RAM module was the culprit in causing the dreaded 2 amber and 5 white "invalid memory installed" POST error.
Zeroing out the XMP profile bytes did the trick and the RAM was recognized and the laptop booted up!
I used the i2c-tools in Linux to zero out the XMP bytes. I was able to write to the SPD by using a SODIMM to DIMM module to insert the laptop memory into a desktop. The XPS 9710 has a BIOS write lock on the I2C bus, so you need to use a desktop to do the modification. I'll post a more detailed write up on this on my blog. I'm sure this voids the warranty of the Kingston ram... and a lot can go wrong, so if you try this, be careful.

Speed does matter, higher is better. generally, with 64gb you are really only going to find at most 3200 or 3600 speeds as it isn't typically easy to run higher capacities above these speeds for ddr4. You also want to look at the cas latency (CL) of the kits. This also plays a role in the performance of the ram. CL20 = could be better, CL18 = good, CL16 = great, cl14 and lower = best but not likely to exist out of the box for such a high capacity. buying two sticks is usually better than four, as it is more stable and therefore easier to run faster speeds or lower timings (such as CL). four sticks are generally only needed if you want more ram than you can find on a kit of 2 sticks. so ideally you want 3600 2x32gb cl16 or cl18 as for recommendations and my own experience: I bought these a few months ago for $125, which was a pretty good price for the speed and latency. they seemed to have jumped up in price, so I'm not sure if they are the best deal right now, but it's worth taking a look in case they ever drop down again. cl16 3600 2x32gb https://www.newegg.com/mushkin-enhanced-64gb/p/N82E16820226993?Item=N82E16820226993 however it seems that the RGB version is cheaper on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093G943JW any other kit 2x32 3600 cl16 seem to cost at least $200 or more, so if you really want the better latency, these seem to be the cheapest kits right now I bought two of the non-RGB kits to run 128gb for super ram-heavy stuff, zero problems so far (not that i'd recommend doing this, just what I personally did). I have them running at cl14 rock solid so there is overclocking and timing tweaking potential if you have the know-how and cpu memory controller for it. however, the extra performance gain is probably not worth the effort in most cases if you don't care for the cl16 (as the price jump is a bit much compared to minimal performance gain) the lowest priced 2x32 3600 cl18 are these (but i have no personal experience with these so DYOR) https://www.newegg.com/patriot-64gb/p/N82E16820225317?Item=N82E16820225317
