A couple a things you may want to do that doesn't look like were addressed in the plans. When you are picking out your boards avoid the ones with pith in them. If you look at the endgrain and see a bullseye that is the pith. The pith is unstable and can cause issues down the road. Alternatively, get 2x12s that have the pith running down the middle and cut the pith out. You'll end up with two quartersawn boards. Additionally, after you buy your boards let them sit in your shop space for a couple of weeks before you build with them. This will give the boards a chance to acclimate. After they acclimate you can flatten them out and start building. Both if these thing reduce the chances of the finished piece warping after it has been built. As you your question, I don't think you'll need a center leg (if that's what you are asking). Though, it may look better with one. Well done! I like pine, people always want hardwood nowadays but pine is timeless. Clear pine is beautiful to me and you won’t find it in the big box stores. I also like the warmth of it with a bit of shellac and wax. The Shakers used pine, a lot, (cherry and maple too) woodworkers have written lots of books about their style. Go to Old Salem and you’ll see the Moravians used pine a lot for their functional pieces. Free local boards is gold in my book! I have some questions if you don’t mind…How wide is it? Did you do anything under the horizontal shelves to mitigate any bowing or cupping if and when there’s too much weight put on them besides the top? I tend to use flat surfaces for books or other things that can be quite heavy. Are there two pieces running on top of each other in the middle? I see what appears to be two different boards in the middle but it could be the stain took differently, a shadow line or perhaps just lighting from the photo. What was your process for staining?
