Hello,
Just ordered 'MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI' and a ryzen 9 9950x3d.
The question is fairly straightforward: Are they compatible or do I need to update the bios?
If I do need to update bios, how would I go about it? Don't I need a cpu in order for it to update? Or does it work even without updating it, but just less efficient? I have never updated a bios so I have no idea what to do...

You will need to use BIOS Flashback to update the BIOS to support this CPU. Plenty of YouTube tutorials - I recommend Mike's Unboxed Hardware and How-to ...

I would flash latest bios before I connect cpu or memory. Just all mobo power cables and follow the official instructions.

I'm in the same boat... I did see briefly a few days ago they had a beta driver... "N" version that looked like the new bios for those CPUs, but then they pulled it... and I never downloaded it... but wonder if it's close. More on reddit.com

So i just got a deal and am building a new PC
i got a MSI MPG Carbon Wifi X870E motherboard and the newly released Ryzen 7 9850X3D....
since the CPU JUST released last week basically, will i need to update my bios before it recognizes it?
Or will the mobo/cpu work right out of the box?
Im only curious because i believe you can flash ur bios without a cpu (please correct me if im wrong only seen a video on it)
would i have to do that first? i dont wanna mess anything up either as ive never done something like this.
Only asking cuz i wanna build my pc and then not have to take it apart after i found out i need to flash it first lol

I have the X670e carbon wifi and plan on getting the 9950X3D tomorrow. I have the latest bios installed but do I need to wait for another update that officially supports the new X3D cpus? I see some MSI boards have bios updates from the last week that mention the 9950x3d, but the X670e carbon wifi latest bios is from January and makes no mention of the new cpus.

New Bios is up on their Website. Still BETA. But a newer Version: 7D70v1N3 So we can try our chips out now. My mainboard comes today, the CPU monday. I guess I have to Bios update without the cpu installed. Any tipps for that or a good video guide out there for updating bios without cpu inside? Cause I did only regular bios updates, for systems that already booted. But it should be impossible to boot with the 9950X3D inside? Cause the X670E Carbon wifi will never know what cpu this is?

August 15, 2025 - Gigabyte/Aorus implemented something similar, disabling one ccd completely and disabling smt. Some games tested by Hardware unboxed showed an improvement, others showed a regression. It could only be accessed through BIOS so changing from the “turbo” mode to normal running meant a full reboot.

Hey guys, please i have just now updated my BIOS to the 3.25 (had zero issues with the previous 3.20 version)
CPU : 9950X3D
AIO : Arctic liquid freezer 3 420
GPU : 7900 XTX Nitro+
MOBO : Nova Wifi
RAM : 64GB Kingston Fury EXPO CL30 6000
PSU : 1200w bequiet
please what BIOS settings can i apply for this setup? I only tweaked the RAM to 6000 for now

I only enabled PBO for my setup that's also a 9950X3D, the motherboard a X870E Taichi, and the BIOS I run is still 3.20 which its been at since I preflashed it back in February during setup. If your CPU is 100% loading your GPU which it certainly should do at 4K as I have that exact same GPU on a 12900KS rig I play at 4K. Then you shouldn't need to tweek much further on your CPU. But if you are feeling like messing with the settings, you could turn on Curve Optimizer, and follow the CO guides of YouTube that say to install Ryzen Master to see which CCD Core is the Starred component, there's usually like 2 (or 4) top cores, those you give lowest negative curve, and the rest of the cores you give the highest negative curve. I only needed to mess with CO when I was working on my ZEN3 rigs that needed more tuning to get the most out of them. I don't feel that way with the 9950X3D, to me its already powerful out of the gate, and simply enabling PBO does the rest for me.

You don’t need to disable PBO or any other super paranoid stuff you may hear in this thread. I have a very similar combo. After turning on the EXPO profile for ram, make sure your VSOC doesn’t exceed 1.200 My profile decided to crank ccd and vpp voltages as well, so I lowered those to .950 on my x870 steel legend WiFi. If tweaking PBO settings, feel free to do whatever but I would recommend avoiding the Scalar setting.
