August 9, 2021TIL Sir Anthony Hopkins was actually the second person considered for the part of Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs. Sean Connery was offered the role first, but turned it down because he thought the script was “disgusting”.
For the reason the director thought Connery was good for that role Connery has that fierce intelligence and also that serious physicality. I love Tony Hopkins, but Sean Connery could be amazing. Fierce intelligence and serious physicality is great and all, but I'd have to say that Anthony Hopkins brought a cold visceral terror, in an otherwise refined package that I could never imagine from Sean Connery. Connery may have refinement, but a barely concealed almost feral barbarity? That's more complex and terrifying than just serious physicality. More on reddit.com
