If you've ever been to Aviary or BarChef (Frankie's bar in Toronto), this approach wouldn't be very surprising. They truly weight the cocktail as a much larger part of the overall bar experience. Most people have never had a simple plated cocktail, let alone one of these "over-the-top", multisensory experiences. Most are also not willing to pay the $25-30 these cocktails typically command. The creators of these drinks are beyond mixologists. They truly are bar chefs. I've always been a "less is more/simple is better" kinda guy, though enjoy exploring a more culinary approach to cocktails. Julie Reiner represents this more traditional take on cocktails. Frankie Solarik epitomizes the "more is better" approach. I believe that cocktail culture has spread so wide that there are many great bartenders today. Judging a cocktail competition is very different from judging a bartending/mixology competition. Between the best of the best, how far must we split hairs to determine a "winner" of the more traditional approach? By raising the expectations to the level that Drink Masters has, it's much easier to pick winners and losers. Far more can and does go wrong. Even then, not having tasted the cocktails myself, I still believe some very fine hairs were split at times. I am not a fan of reality TV. The forced drama and manipulation of the producers literally turns my stomach. Overall, however, I found Drink Masters to be entertaining, if not a large educational experience. Like many of us, I would love to know more details and taste the finished results. The drama was real and actually helped to tell the story. Whether we like the story they told or not is very akin to cocktails. It's all a matter of taste and preference. More on reddit.com
