Can straight actors play gay roles? Nathan Lane says yes.
I think it's more complicated than should or shouldn't they based off of talent. Hollywood was VERY gay before the Hayes Code put actors in the closet and we are still battling with gay actors still not feeling like their careers will be successful if they come out of the closet and play roles that speak to their sexuality and sexuality experiences. I think straight actors should be advocating for their peers to be free rather than taking a role solely because of ability to convincing play the role, whatever that means. What does "believability" even mean when it comes to sexuality. There are plenty of straight men with conventionally accepted feminine mannerisms and there are gay men with conventionally accepted masculine mannerisms. Then believe it or not friends there are bisexual and pansexual men who could be femme but still like to romance and sleep with women. That's binary bullshit that I'm not interested in even discussing anymore because it's tired and old hat. I can't believe we're even still having this surface level conversation. What I'm more interested in is can/how safely can gay actors play gay roles. And can a gay role be more than a palette swap straight guy with crew cut hairstyle. More on reddit.com

Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer And Nathan Lee Graham Discuss Their New ‘Mid-Century Modern’ Sitcom
March 27, 2025 - Kohan said, “The casting is one part and Ryan Murphy had a big hand in that. He just gave the script to Nathan Lane, who was our first choice. And Matt Bomer, we had written somebody much older than Matt Bomer. We had to reconceive the role, based on Ryan saying, ‘You know, it would be nice to have that.’ We’d worked with Matt before and loved the idea.
