I read that Liotta was Scorsese’s initial choice to play Queenan (Martin Sheen’s role) in The Departed. It sounds like it didn’t work out because of scheduling conflicts which is a shame. Anyways, Scorsese wanted to work with Liotta again but it just didn’t work out unfortunately. Edit: Ah whoops, he was actually chosen to play Dignam (Mark Wahlberg’s character) More on reddit.com

I don’t understand how he went from playing the lead role in Goodfellas (arguably one of the best performances of the 90s) to mostly b-movies with some exceptions (CopLand/Blow) but even with these exceptions he plays a-near minor role. Don’t get me wrong, Liotta is one of my favorite actors and I actually love a lot of the smaller movies he did in the late 90s/early 2000s but I feel he was being way underutilized with bigger movies and given bad movies. Seeing him in Place Beyond the Pines makes me think “Geez why hasn’t he been in a great movie for the last 20 years?”
Can someone explain how this happened? Was he turning down bigger roles? Did he not get offered anything bigger?
