r/learnjavascript on Reddit: Is the book "A Smarter Way to Learn JavaScript" by Mark Myers outdated?
August 9, 2020 -
I am trying to learn javascript in 2020 from the book " A Smarter Way to Learn JavaScript "( by Mark Myers ) that was written in 2013 probably and ES6 was released in 2015 so is it right to think that this book is outdated as of my knowledge there must be a lot of new concepts introduced in new ES6. So can i still use this book? I am confused.

You should probably get a book that at least covers ES2015 (aka ES6) since that update introduced a few very important concepts. There has been an update to ECMAScript every years since 2015 but they've been minor compared to ES2015.

I’m biased because that book really helped me learn JS. I started leaning in 2015, so it was fitting then. I am so sorry he hasn’t made an update because I really loved his very short, to the point, no frills style. There are things he explained there that I looked at in at least 3 other places that I struggled with that finally clicked. Fundamentals are fundamentals, they don’t change and that’s what he covers. There are, however newer ways to write it that are a little different, but those differences are not as hard to learn if you understand what you’ve learned thus far. Plus, if you ever find yourself looking at older code, you’ll know what it is and the differences. I’ve been given a few small projects to update old code, so knowing the old ways has served me well. So if you like it, use it. There is a lot in there that is still valid and important to know. Then know that the next thing on your journey would be to learn the newer syntax.
