That AARP card is mediocre and not worth getting. There are better cards out there that can give you more than 3% in gas or drugstores. Honestly that modest 2% on medical expenses is what I'm thinking about getting it for. 2% in medical expenses is awful when you realize that there are a lot of cards that give you 2% on everything you spend on including medical expenses. My advice, ignore anything that is 2% or 2x in any specific category, because it is pointless considering there are a bunch of 2% catch-all cards out there. Answer from JigglyJello1 on reddit.com

January 29, 2025 - I had 3 Barclay cards. Nothing but trouble. I couldn’t get a Carnival MasterCard with a credit score of 840 and 0 debt. That said they needed additional information for processing. I faxed and emailed never a reply. That turned out to be a good thing. I read HORRIBLE reviews about Barclaycard after I applied.

Barclays Card Experiences?
I had the Barclays Uber card. I've literally never taken an Uber, but the card originally offered 4% cash back on restaurants, which was useful to me. I don't recall my credit limit, but I do recall generally hating the card. I enable alerts on all of my credit cards to help guard against fraud (and also to act as a receipt). With nearly all of my credit cards, I get an email within minutes, sometimes seconds, of making a charge. My Uber card would take literally days to alert me--and the email didn't even name the merchant, so it was really hard to use. I would get an email on Wednesday night telling me about a mystery $14 purchase on Monday, forcing me to try to remember what I bought on Monday. The charges were always legitimate ("Oh, right, lunch at that Thai restaurant was around $14!"), but as both a security alert and as a receipt the emails were largely useless. They eventually revamped the card so it was no longer useful to me. I cashed out the rewards, put it away, and they eventually cancelled it for non-use. I really was not impressed by Barclays as an issuer. I'd be reluctant to try another of their cards. More on reddit.com

December 6, 2021 - We recently were forced to change our AARP Chase credit card to the AARP Barclays Mastercard which was a complete disaster. We could not get answers from Chase, Barclays or AARP. waited hours on hold with no results. The Barclays card is inferior to most cards out there and if we actually wanted their card you can go directly to them and get $100 bonus but not if going through AARP.

r/CreditCards on Reddit: In my early 50s: Is the Barclays AARP Credit Card worth it?
January 26, 2023 -

There are currently 2 Barclays AARP credit cards (both no AF):

- The AARP Essential Rewards unlimited cash back MasterCard: 3% on gas & drug store purchases, 2% on eligible Medical expenses, and 1% on everything else.

- The AAPR Travel Rewards unlimited cash back MasterCard: 3% on airfare, hotel stays and car rentals, 2% on restaurants, and 1% on everything else.

Now I'm in my early 50s and an AARP member, so I got targeted for those cards. The only SUB is a meager $100 cash back bonus. I have no interest in the Travel Rewards one, because I already have cards offering better deals.

Now the other one is tickling me a bit. The 3% on gas and drug stores (excludes Target and Walmart) is not bad. The 2% on medical expenses is attractive, and those are detailed in the TOS as such:

Dentists, Orthodontists, Osteopathic Physicians, Chiropractors, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Opticians, Optical Goods & Eyeglasses, Chiropodists, Podiatrists, Hospitals, Medical and Dental Laboratories, Hearing Aids, Ambulance Services, Orthopedic Goods, Prosthetic Devices, Nursing and Personal Care Facilities, Medical Services & Health Practitioners not elsewhere classified (NEC) and Doctors not elsewhere classified (NEC), as identified by the merchant category codes.

Why did I mention I'm in my early 50s? Well, because, my friends, it's about the time some shit starts to go downhill a bit, even if you take good care of yourself. Now I have a pretty damn good employer-sponsored PPO, dental and vision insurance, but our family still have out-of-pocket balances and copays amounting to several hundreds a year, and I am thinking about getting LASIK this year, which will probably run me at least $1.5K out of pocket.

Honestly that modest 2% on medical expenses is what I'm thinking about getting it for. I have the Citi Costco card for cash back on gas (4%, but it's not exactly cash back, just a once-a-year check redeemable at Costco only), and I have better cards for general cashback (Citi Custom Cash and BofA CCR).

So, any other geezers out there who have this card and are happy about it just for that category? Because honestly that's its only differentiator – I don't know of any other card that has a cashback on that category. I do have 2x cards but that's just points I'd rather transfer for miles.

r/CreditCards on Reddit: Barclays Card Experiences?
March 17, 2022 -

I almost never see any postings about Barclays credit cards. Wondering if anyone has one and what your experience with them is, most importantly about the CL they give initially. I have a 5K balance transfer that I want to do and most of their cards have 0% for 15 mths on BT's. There is a BT fee, but I'm fine with that, because the AARP card also gives a $200 SUB, which will offset it. I know there are better issuers/cards but I am saving those for later, it's a long story...But I basically just want to know what kind of initial CL I might expect, based on others experience. Are they generous with CL's like AMEX and Chase, or not initially??

Also, do I have to be over 65 to get the AARP card? There's no restriction mentioned on their site.

5 current cards, CL's are CSP at 16k, AMEX at 10K, a Discvr and a BofA at 6K each, and a Cap One at 2K. 90K income, 735 FICO. Oldest card (CapOne) is 3.5 yrs old.

I had one of these a longgg time ago... back when I was a lot less responsible financially and carrying some credit card debt. What I remember is that it was my card with the lowest rate so I called to ask for an increase when I was trying to work my debts down and consolidate. At the same time I was doing this I was always so trying to get a higher line at my other low rate card which I think was with Citibank. Barclays absolutely refused any increase while my other card gave me one. A few years down the road when I really improved my financial situation I just canceled it, I think it was to this date only credit card I proactively canceled. Understandable that with their lower rate they were more conservative. It's been a long time so I can't remember the specific credit limit I have but it was much lower than my other cards as well. maybe 5k when I had 7k to 15k on all other cards
