r/woodworking on Reddit: Suggested product to maintain acacia wood table?
June 29, 2021 -

We just bought this acacia wood table from crate and barrel:

https://www.crateandbarrel.com/yukon-natural-92-dining-table/s335376

We really like the light gloss the table has and we’d like to keep a similar finish. I just want to make sure I protect the wood as it is a dinner table and we live in a climate that will be more humid in the summer and more dry in the winter.

I’ve read tung oil would be good but not sure if that would be similar to what it already has on it. I could see it having some kind of wax on it now.

Damp cotton rag/microfiber cloth. That's it. "Tung oil" and "teak oil" are finishes, they are meant to go on raw wood or over previous coats of themselves. It's either got a lacquer (most likely) or polyurethane (second most likely) finish on it already. The best thing to do is just use it. Use coasters. Put something under hot cookware or serving dishes before setting them on the surface. Slightly soapy water and a damp cloth for spills, then a clean cloth with just water, then dry with a clean cloth. Windex for stubborn spills. Anything else can damage the finish (next to try would be alcohol, then mineral spirits, and finally acetone as a last resort before moving on to sanding it down and refinishing it) If it's even a half decent finishing job with modern lacquer or poly, it should last 20 years of regular use before ever wearing through the finish. Could last 100 or more if you use a tablecloth, coasters, etc. Short story: it won't be good with applying tung or teak oil on it, and no further finish is necessary. Edit: it's an acrylic finish, which is just like poly. Treat the same as stated above.
