An Acknowledgement of Country is a mark of respect that can be given by anyone and an important part of our Reconciliation process that we all have the responsibility to foster through our teaching, research and community activities.

On March 31, 2022, we convened a panel of CAC staff and community members for a conversation about developing formal language and concrete actions to recognize Native people as traditional caretakers of the land and water near the confluence of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. In practice, land acknowledgement is much more than a statement of respect and humility: it calls us all to learn, teach, and internalize Native traditions across generations, including the experiences and perspectives of Native people today.

The Chicago region was a site of trade, travel, gathering, and healing for more than a dozen other Native tribes, including the Menominee, Michigamea, Miami, Kickapoo, Peoria, Sac and Fox, and Ho-Chunk nations. As the current inhabitants on these lands, we believe in the power of recognizing place and our relationship to the land and its community of caretakers, past and present. We acknowledge all Native peoples who came before us and who continue to contribute to our City.

An Acknowledgement of Country is a means by which all people can show respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and heritages and the ongoing connection and relationship with the land and sea.

The University of Illinois System – with its universities in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield – rests on the land of multiple native nations. These lands were the traditional birthright of indigenous peoples who were forcibly removed and who have faced two centuries of struggle for survival and identity in the wake of dispossession. We hereby acknowledge the ground on which we stand so that all who come here know that we recognize our responsibilities to the peoples of that land and that we strive to address that history so that it guides our work in the present and the future.
