r/appletv on Reddit: Apple Live TV watching considering ditching Sky Q
March 10, 2024 -

Hi guys I'm in Wales UK and I've recently picked up the Apple TV 4K 128gb box and loving it. The wife is wondering why we still have Sky Q, and hates having all the remotes.. I'm wondering how feasible it would be to ditch Sky all together and just use Apple TV? 'TV Launcher' app has been recommended on other reddit posts, she likes the idea of recording tv sometimes still and I explained I think that's old hat nowadays really..

For others that have made this sort of move, what did you do and what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

I made the move in Jan and I haven't considered any of the offers Sky keep throwing at me to come back. They have sent me several but after using my Apple TV box with all the apps over the last few months, the Apple TV user interface feels so much quicker and nicer to use so I wont be going back any time soon. Here are my tips. If you want to watch live TV, purchase the TV Launcher app for the one off fee. Its a few seconds behind actual live TV as its via the internet (so not great for live football, etc) but it does the job. Do you have freeview built in to your TV and a freeview aerial on your roof? If so, just use that for the odd time you want to see something actually live like international sports, etc. Do you actually watch live TV much any more though? Consider 2) below. I watch anything on terrestrial TV via the catchup services after the show now (iPlayer, ITVX, 4OD, My5, etc) as when I looked at it, I never watched anything actually live. Want the shows to be ad-free? Consider 3) below. One thing that used to annoy me about Sky Q was having to skip the ads so instead of paying Sky £50+ a month to record and watch the shows then skip through the ads each time, I decided to pay the extra for ITX premium (£5.99 a month) and 4OD+ (£3.99 a month). Both are cheaper if you pay for the year (ITX = £59.99, 4OD+ £39.99). iPlayer is already ad-free. Now I dont even have to skip ads as they dont even show up! The shows just continue. On top of that, ITVX has a decent catalogue of stuff (Britbox) so there are loads of old shows you might like to watch again too. If you had multiroom with sky, just buy another Apple TV box for the other rooms. Its costs a bit initially but you can watch all of the above on a different TV and no extra ongoing monthly cost. I watch Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime but there are only so many hours in the day so I just rotate my subscriptions. i.e. Watch everything I want to on Netflix for a month then cancel it and watch everything I want to watch on Disney+, then Amazon Prime and just keep rotating. It's working well and saves me a bit of money. It also helps you focus on what you actually want to watch. If you had Sky for Sky Sports, I can recommend NowTV to fill those needs. They are always offering deals when you cancel so I am currently paying £20 a month for 6 months and get all the Sky Sports channels. I plan to cancel in June for a couple of months when the football season finishes late May. You probably need their 'Boost' add-on though otherwise the quality is 720p so not great. I pay £1 extra a month for the next 3 months and that upgrades it to 1080p, Dolby Digital, you can have 3 streams at a time (so you could share this with a friend to save money). I have also sorted Discovery+ (TNT Sports) via my EE mobile phone contract and its worked out at about £5 a month which I dont mind paying to give me Champions League football and the other premier league games I was missing. Like my rotating method for Netflix, Disney+, etc, I also do the same for NowTV Entertainment as they have lots of shows I like (comedy panel shows, box sets of GOT, House of the Dragon, Sopranos, etc). Again, NowTV always offer you a deal if you cancel after the first month of paying full price (£9.99 a month). I am currently paying £5.99 a month for the next 6 months. So there you go! You can replicate what you had with Sky, save a bit of money, still have multiroom and the flexibility to cancel anything with 30 days notice and get it back whenever you want instead of being tied to an 18 month contract. Alternatively, you can just use the catchup services for free with ads and save a lot of money. Just depends what price you put on convenience really. Hope you find this list useful. 🙂

Honestly it’s such a shame sky don’t offer Go as a separate option as the Apple TV app is great
