September 21, 2023 -

Hello. I’m using the adobe Photoshop color picker to figure out what colors are in this photograph. I am color blind. I find it very weird that I am pointing at what I think is probably or should be a light green, but Adobe Photoshop is telling me the hue is 47° which is somewhere around Orange yellow. I put a little white indicator on the stem. I am looking at on the right. Is this green? Can anyone explain this?

Hi, u/2deep4u . Good to see a question from you again. I hadn't paid attention to who had created this post when I commented yesterday. One use for the gradient that we get from color dot adobe is that it can be based on a color scheme. Color palettes can be complementary—using colors from opposite sides of the color wheel for creating contrast in an image. Let's say we are using Photoshop. We can create a gradient fill adjustment layer that uses complementary colors, in a reflected gradient. We can have a warm color in the middle and a cool color on either side, essentially creating a subtle vignette that doesn't look like a run of the mill radial vignette. It draws the viewer's eye to where we want due to the color temperature contrast. We can take those same warm/cool complementary colors and use them in a Ps gradient map adjustment layer or use them with the Lr color grading wheels. These mechanisms assign the colors to ranges of brightness. Most often we see warm assigned to highlights and cool to shadows, but that doesn't need to be that way. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ We can get other color schemes from color.adobe. If you've ever watched the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon, or Jeopardy, there is a very specific color palette used in each called an analogous color palette. There is a lot of deep blue to purple used, with an occasional warm accent. This is so the skin of the people on the show contrast with the background, but the background doesn't intrude. Cool colors make things recede, while warm colors come forward. When you watch tv commercials, observe the color schemes used. The color range in commercials is quite restricted and purposeful. The color.adobe site can help us choose what might work together well for a specific purpose. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ I don't work commercially so I don't often need to use something like color.adobe. I've been studying the RGB (and RYB) color wheel for quite a few years. I'm very comfortable using that knowledge to create color gradients in my photo editing. Others who might be new to color theory would accrue good benefit from what color.adobe shows them about how colors from around the color wheel interact with each other. https://99designs.com/blog/tips/exploring-the-real-color-wheel-in-photoshop/ https://www.learnui.design/blog/color-in-ui-design-a-practical-framework.html https://www.learnui.design/blog/the-hsb-color-system-practicioners-primer.html The above are three sites that might have useful info for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbSh7A-zi78 Above is a video from Sean Bagshaw in which he's talking with Blake Rudis about the use of color. It gets into gradients. Below is a video from Blake Rudis that gets into color toning using gradient maps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaa10d3oRAI .
