Most of the “legit” ones will ask for submission fees but nothing after you’re accepted. New American Paintings comes to mind, as well as Maake Mag, Friend of the Artist, Art Maze, etc. Another good detail to go off of is if they have good guest jurors come on — gallerists, curators, museum directors, etc. Answer from wongone on reddit.com

r/Art on Reddit: Anyone else notice this about Aesthetica Magazine?
December 2, 2017 -

I was recently looking through Aesthetica magazine, one of the biggest art publications and I noticed that they are almost exclusively about women. Basically, it was like it was a "women's art magazine" featuring some men here and there.

Isn't this quite sexist?

Hello artists and art related people! I'm gathering opinions and resources for creating an online free art magazine. I worked for an art gallery and met loads of interesting people who inspired me to apply my marketing and design skills in order to create exposure for artists.

I am looking to gain 2 things out of this post and I'd love if you could help me:

Firstly, I'd love meeting new artists and seeing some of your work. I frequent other subs and I keep researching. This time, since you all seem very friendly and eager to make connections I am actually looking forward for direct contact. Drop me a dm just to show me any art related things or talk about the magazine!

Secondly, I am lacking people with some sort of certification (art critic, art historian, etc) and I'd love to ask your advice on what is the best way to reach anybody that fits that description. I already am acquaintances with an art historian from when I worked with the gallery afore-mentioned, but I'd like to be closer to a finished product before I start approaching people I already know.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my post, looking forward to chatting with you.

P.S. if anybody has any experience creating an art magazine from scratch or even working for one, I'd love to hear your story

Not really sure what you have in mind for "people with some sort of certification (art critic, art historian, etc)" but I am active in my local arts guild and our guidelines for selecting jurors for out shows is that they mush have an MFA or equivalent degree and have a history of professional activity in the art world. We try not to get anybody who is very local, since we want to try to minimize bias based on the fact that the local community knows each other socially and professionally. We are reconsidering the requirement for an MFA now, thinking that if you are self taught you're not necessarily less of an artist. We recruit a lot of the jurors by walking non-local shows and talking to exhibiting artists. Art Prize in Grand Rapids, MI has been a big source for us. We have also had gallery owners as jurors. I've written or done art for a couple of small print on demand photography publications. They are mostly labors of love, with limited distribution. I still enjoy being able to tell the story of how a piece of art came to be, to discuss the creative process. Artists all crave exposure but a new magazine is difficult. Even established magazines have difficulty staying in business now. How are you planning to publicize and distribute the magazine? It will be hard to attract talented contributors without a track record and difficult to create a track record without talented contributors. I would suggest that you pick some niche or niches to concentrate on (my personal choice would be figurative fine art photography because that is what I do) or do a regional focus.

r/ArtHistory on Reddit: Books and magazines that talk about aesthetic theory in art and photography?
August 25, 2021 -

I'm a digital photography major, and sincerely, my favorite class in the whole major was my "Photographic Aesthetic Theory" class. That was the first time I've ever enjoyed writing an essay for the class, and was so proud with the stuff I wrote. But now I want to look for books and magazines that focus on this specific subject, even in a philosophical sense. I only have training in photography, but I could also explore philosophical aesthetic theory in regular art too.

Could anyone suggest books and magazines about this subject? I'd greatly appreciate it!

I've gotten into the idea of subscribing to actual, hard-copy magazines. Kind of like enjoying vinyl records instead of digital streaming, it's nice to hold something in your hand and enjoy it rather than scrolling through another website. Are there any art publications you guys recommend?

Edit: I'm biased as the OP, but I propose throwing this up on the sidebar. Lots of great stuff here for people who want to learn more about art.

I get so tired of staring at a screen reading blogs and looking at social media. Something about holding a magazine in my hand is more appealing. I love the photography, random articles, and the fresh bursts of inspiration. I find information on the internet to be overwhelming and oversaturated.

I want to subscribe to a magazine, but haven’t done so in years. Which ones are still relevant? I used to be a big fan of Vogue, W, Cosmo and Nylon, but I don’t know if they are as good as they used to be.

I’ve heard positive things about Town and Country and of course, Magnolia Journal.

What are your current favorites?
