everywhere i go everything is 20$+ for a shirt?? like shouldnt they be 10$ at most bc thrift stores are usually used clothes? anyway, looking for places close to queens, but anywhere near the city is fine!! i just cant find any thrift stores (item + clothing thrift stores!)
I’ve lived in New York City for 17 years now and I recently got into thrifting. I live in manhattan and thrifting is really bad there, overpriced, etc. Even the recommended stores like L Train on 14th. I’ve seen some better prices in queens and brooklyn, but i have little experience there. What are some thrift store recommendations that are better priced and/or more obscure?

For example, The places I’ve checked out seem to price shirts (plain random shirts, not designer or anything) at like tjmaxx comparable prices..
I’ve been to a few Goodwills that were DECENT, but the one in Brooklyn is getting crazy with their prices (they’ve made the store to appeal more to those who just thrift for trends, but what about people who actually can’t afford other many options than thrifting??), and I tried Buffalo Exchanges but they’re not really worth it in my opinion

Salvation Army in Hell's Kitchen and most Goodwill locations are still cheap (items under $10 are common).
Honestly have found the best pop ups and shops on instagram. If you follow @thrift2death, they had a huge warehouse sale near red hook this past weekend with like 30+ vendors where most items were in the $5-20 range.
A lot of the cheaper thrifting options have been in brooklyn in my experience.

L Train Vintage is great. There are a bunch of locations in Brooklyn and the East Village, and they consistently have good stuff for reasonable prices. Beacon’s and Buffalo Exchange are also worth a look, but you’ll have to do more digging. 10 Foot Single by Stella Dallas in Williamsburg is a bit pricier, but you can find some great deals, especially on accessories. I also adore Awoke Vintage (they have locations in Williamsburg and Greenpoint); their regular retail prices are a bit high, but they have amazing sale racks that they update regularly.
L Train Vintage is regularly recommended. Telco and El Mundo among others are recommended by Stores with very cheap clothes? from 8 days ago. Le Point Value and Goodwill among others are recommended by Good Inexpensive thrift stores in nyc? from 2 months before that. Soho and L train Vintage among others are recommended by Best Housing Works for men's clothing? from 3 days before that. L Train vintages is recommended by Best thrift stores in NYC? from 1 day before that and links to similar questions.
Are there any cheap thrift stores in the city that have prices comparable to thrift stores outside of NYC? I feel like the ones in the city charge way more than your average thrift shop.

My family is going to new York in 8 days. What is the best thrift store, ideally accessible by walking or public transport as won't have a car and stuff you could take back on a plane E.g not furniture . Curated more exspensive Vintage stores also okay, but hoping to find where people who live in New York actually go, that isn't too over priced and often has a good range. Flee Markets also accepted as we will be there for at least a week (need to look at length again) from the 18th.
Sorry if this is a repeated question I will take it down if it is.

Edit: good point below, I should add that I mean in central new York kind of area or accessible easily by transport rather than out in far suburbs or not near anywhere, but anywhere suggested I will take a look if it works from where I am staying. (Sorry if that doesn't make sense I can give a better sense of area)
NYC in my opinion is the best city in the US to thrift in. The high concentration of very wealthy and fashionable people means that the chances of finding something incredible are much higher than in your average city. Ive found a shit ton of good stuff, both for myself and for resell. Ive probably made about $10,000 off of stuff that I have resold this year. Here are some general tips.

Go early, but not too early Don't go right when the store opens, because usually they haven't put the new stuff out yet. I generally go about an hour after opening time just to be safe.

Know where the put new items Most shops have a method for how the put new items on the rack, figure it out and your life will be a lot easier.

If you don't see anything you like leave Best advice you'll get honestly. Its never a good idea to buy something just to buy it, you'll save money and time by leaving without getting anything. I probably get something 20% of the time i got into a shop.

Go frequently Its better to go once a day for 5 min than to go once a week and stay for half an hour.

Avoid the weekend Its generally more crowded, more picked over and the trains are worse.

Hi everyone! I have severe OCD (like, actually diagnosed), and I find that planning, even if it involves some flexibility, is incredibly helpful with mitigating anxiety.
It’s been a while since my last visit to NYC, last time I was here was before COVID. I’m a big fan of thrifting, and I was thinking it would be a fun way to explore different parts of the city while also indulging in some thrifting fun. ☺️
If you could plan day exploring your top 5-7 thrift or resale shops in NYC, what would those shops be, and what route would you take?
My only ask is that the shops have clothing & accessories that’d be categorized as “men’s clothing.”
I’m open to staying within a limited area or spreading out my stops across the city. I’m comfortable walking, taking Uber/cabs, or using public transportation to get around. Although, with the current weather, I feel like walking for more than like 20 mins might be a little too chilly for me (I’m visiting from Austin) lol.
