I had the same issue, and a simple solution fixed the problem for me. I wiped off the metal end of the right AirPod, and then used a Q-tip to clean the bottom of the case where the metal end of the right AirPod made contact with the case. Works great once again and holds charge. Hope this helps! Of course, if the problem persists, getting in contact with someone at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store nearest to you would be advised. since my airpods still had the 1 year apple warranty, i brought them to the apple store and they just gave me new ones. I never tried to pry up the contact fingers slightly because I didn’t have a tool small enough to grab them, but also because I was scared to damage and ruin the warranty. If you bought yours within the last year, just bring them to the apple store!

AirPods Case not charging - Apple Community

So it's either a bit of dust in the port that might have been removed or an intermittent fault with the airpods?
